So what difference does having an ITIN make?? Any at all?

Will it change anything if I have one?

Well not really, however an ITIN will make it easier for you to open a bank account and possibly get a credit card. And I'm not entirely sure but I think you can use your ITIN plus other paperwork to get a DL or a driving priviledge card (utah). oh, and you can pay/receive your taxes with an ITIN (if you work)

oh, Scottrade also lets you trade in the stock market w/an ITIN. Hopefully I'll be making a living this way next semester.

yeah, you get an ITIN by filing your income tax... the first time you file, the IRS will issue you one in a matter of weeks. It doesn't grant you the right to work, vote or anything of that nature but it does help you quite a bit. For example, you can open up a bank account and possibly get a credit card... pretty awesome huh?

if you want to get a get a tax id number, go to an accountant to open one.. make sure you trust this person though.. i went to my family accountant few years ago and she helped me open up my tax id for 1099 account. not all banks will allow you to open up an account.. most of the banks turned me down because i didnt have my ss number.. finally decided to go chase and they allowed me to open up an account with just my tax id number..goodluck

I plan on getting a Tax ID # as soon as I have the money to pay for it.
But it seems like that's gonna have to wait even more now, seeing my dad has a ticket to pay for now...

Also, one of my friends was telling me to try to get a DL with a Tax ID #, but I live in Florida, I don't think they allow that in here.
Which means I'd have to go to the DMV and lie, saying my Tax ID # is actually a SS.
That's what my friend told me I should do.

No... you can't do that. An ITIN is NOT a SSN. Besides... you wouldn't even be able to get one because you have to provide proof of a SSN, either by having the card or by W-2 form, etc.

Any H&R Block in a hispanic area advertises help applying for an ITIN. I would get one.
