Because it was a program meant for legal residents which she took advantage of by providing a fake SSN. Not providing one would have made her ineligible. Now that she’s updated her SSN they have realize she is wasn’t a legal resident at the time when she applied to it since now she has a new real SSN

Yeah it seems like the only options are to get a lawyer and fight it, pay up and move on, or don't pay up and move on.

I would say do anything you can to clear it up and pay up.

Men... were we dumb when we were little kids/young adults. OP, stop trying to force the situation and pay the college back. You essentially committed fraud. Don’t piss off the Dean or he/she can call the cops on you. Deal with the $$$$$ consequences and be glad there is a money way out.

Yeah in our world, this sort of fraud is an egregious crime with no defense so it's probably better to pay up and correct the error as a slight of the pen as if it never happened.

I find situations like this absolutely infuriating. Ive dealt with all the associated struggles of living undocumented/DACA and there are others out there who clearly didnt care for the law.

Feigning "ignorance"-WHOOPS by listing a fake SSN is serious fraud, basically stealing identity which is a federal offense.

Seriously OP, forget about the money or the grades. Just hope that DHS or USCIS doesnt catch on,
Better yet, even when immigration reform happens, this is going to be a noticeable stink when they review your paperwork

....while you have DACA, might as well claim citizenship and start voting as well... with an SSN youre only halfway there >_<

Its bad apples like OP that give the rest of us a bad look

After assessing the responses here - It seems that you belong to jail for knowingly and deliberately committing fraud and now wants to play the victim card.

This might seriously come back and bite her in the back. The college could attempt
To sue and holy cow cops and whatnot would get involved. Imagine how out of hand it could
Get if fox learns this

Before you apply for any school programs make sure to find out if the requirements are be a legal ( DACA is not legal but lawful)

@ OP, i think there's a lot of assumptions in the comments when there's not enough information. A lawyer may be the best idea, a couple questions that seem important

why was the hold put in the first place? there must've been a clear explanation for that. Legally, you should at least be able to update your SSN record without having to pay, since you're just providing accurate info now.

Do you have the official requirements for the program from the time that you signed up? The distinction is important, for example, if the requirements were that a student be a USC, a permanent resident, an international student, or simply a resident of the state for tax purposes, etc. The fact they didnt ask for documents means they weren't strict in veryfing the information, which is partly on them. Cautiously, i'd check to see if there was anything else they were vague about then, that can be helpful now. Just remember putting down USC on any form is a big no, if there's any doubt about that then it would be best to move on.

How was the program funded? If its simply by the school, the state, or from a federal program/funds? This matters because it explains why you owe the money. For example, if its for students with in-state tuition, even with a fake SSN, in some states you still could've qualified.

Why would the college ask for their money back after she updated her SSN?
