However, when you realize the vastness of the universe and all the trillions of planets that are out there, then it's easier to understand that in at least one of them, all the variables could have come together to allow life to evolve. I can't justify believing in a deity because the moon causes the tides. The fact of the matter is that the evolution of life on Earth can be random.

Then when you shift your focus from astrophysics to the quanta, you're taken aback by the way particles behave (the uncertainty principle, for instance). "God does not play dice."

The universe could indeed have been created out of nothing or maybe it has always existed, and we're just a brane in the multiverse like String Theory suggests. Your scientist friends are right to be Agnostic; we just don't know... yet.
I agree with what you say. It really becomes a matter of numbers and statistical probability. What may have been uncertain in small numbers forms patterns and even that uncertainty becomes infinitesimally small. It's the same thing when people dismiss alien life as a possibility. It's just the fact that the probability exists in the 1st place and the fact that not only the variables could come together, but the variables themselves exist.

In all seriousness I feel physics is the only thing coming close to explaining how everything started. I'm not claiming to know beyond the scope of what i've been thaught, which is merely a focus in applied newtonian physics.

No, I think Daffodils nailed it.

I'm surprised that -as a scientist- you choose the intelligent design argument as proof of the existence of god. Personally, I find teleological arguments the easiest ones to debunk since they're largely based on empirical observation. Anyone with a reasonable sense of sight can see how erroneous they are, so to speak.

You state that “miraculous incidents” support the intelligent design claim, largely omitting all the other not-so-miraculous incidents, you know, tornados, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, world hunger, poverty, among others. Did god mess up on those with his almighty intelligence? I doubt it. The fact of the matter is that we live in an imperfect, chaotic universe that has evolved into an ordered, self-perpetuating one with an expiration date.

But what I find rather contradicting is how you claim that you don't blindly believe in the bible, you just happen to oppose capital punishment, abortion, stem cell research, and homosexuality in part because of its influence. Awesome. That's like saying you're not gay, but you enjoy getting it on with the same sex, and watching gay porn. I'm sorry to break it to you, but those positions makes you a bible thumper.

Speaking of gays, I'm glad we're ok in your book. As long as we keep decorating homes and bedazzling your clothes, I guess we're kind of peaceable. But when we fight for equality and get all political we turn into “annoying Republicans”. Except for the fact that, say being a Republican, or a christian for that matter, is actually a choice, whereas being gay... -well, let's just put it this way: I've yet to meet a person who would choose to be discriminated against from the moment he can pick up a barbie doll over a truck. And no, having gay friends is no excuse to be a bigot.

Frankly, you strike me as a so-called buffet catholic, who cherry picks what to believe in so as to fit with your preconceptions. I'm sure that if you were diagnosed with brain cancer tomorrow, or gave birth to a gay daughter your positions on homosexuality and stem cells would suddenly change. Then again, there's people like Cheney so who knows, really.

PS: I'd like to apologize to Hrvatica beforehand.

I'm not an atheist I think, because I do somehow feel like there is a higher being ruling over us. So I would identify myself as a non-believer or some sort, that is I do not accept the Christian god or other god that are claimed out there. It seems to me that different religions are giving out their own interpretations of god, and they are based on human reasoning, or teachings from religious leader rather than a true knowledge but in fact, we do not know the truth or never will.

Hey, i'll be the 1st to admit the bible is full of errors, it's the doctrine that I side with.

You state that “miraculous incidents” support the intelligent design claim, largely omitting all the other not-so-miraculous incidents, you know, tornados, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, world hunger, poverty, among others. Did god mess up on those with his almighty intelligence? I doubt it. The "miraculous incidents" i describe are of a personal nature. I pray for something, it comes true, tada, way too often to be coincidental. Call it crazy, it works for me...

In all honesty can you claim that some of the morality and social norms by which you live aren't forged by the judeochristian doctrine in some way? I knew that things were gonna get twisted for how I worded it, so I'll rephrase. Much of my morale is formed by personal observation and choice. More often than not, it's the science that drives my support for or against an issue, but I have to admit, that perhaps my religious beliefs may cloud that judgment (Even I don't know the answer to that one).

Capital punishment--don't believe in taking a life, it costs too much financially, it's not punishment enough (living w/the guilt is). Again, that bible forgiveness thing drives some of that belief.

Abortion--don't believe in taking a life. You may argue life doesn't start until birth (many scientists debate that one too). To me, if there were no unicellular beings in that proverbial soup 4 billion years ago, we wouln't be here. Tell me if they find a single cell in mars that it wouln't be called "life". You can't just pick one side and not the other; its hypocritical. Condom broke? get a morning after pill, you've got 48 hours 'til conception. How's taking responsability for one's actions for a change? Don't want the baby, someone else surely does. It's the many einsteins, newtons, and mozarts that we've missed that I feel for.

Stem Cell research--again, an implantable embryo is life to me. Even in the form of Parthenogenesis, i'm a little more open, but not by a lot. It's a tough one, 'cuz I hate to see science get stumped, but even unregulated science can have dire consequences (nuclear bomb, human experimentation, etc..)

Homosexuality--The '73 APA decision to remove it from the manual as "sexual deviations" based on a single study was controversial to say the least. There was pressure from advocacy groups and civil rights movements. In one had, I'm glad it occurred, since it gave homosexuals a better treatment in society, but on the other hand it stopped scientific research that could perhaps support the issue and give credibility to it all. Most studies that i've read supporting homosexuality as "natural" are full of conjectures and barely hold any water. I fail to see them hold up against peer review, but again, having peer review would be bigotry.

I'm glad you could see how I feel about gays from what i've written. Seriously, is the value of a person nothing more than where they chose to dip their pecker? A sexual behavior is nothing more than that. Without going biblical, in organisms where there's two sexes, the natural thing is for these to mate and reproduce, it's the same in plants as in animals. Not for pleasure, not for relieving stress, but reproduction. That does not mean that natural=right and unnatural=wrong. If that were the case than I'm as unnatural for fucking my gf in the ass, or tossing her salad. Could you claim heterosexual anal sex is a natural sexual behavior? If you want to move onto love, than, that in itself is an unnatural thing, a manic state where serotonin is released from being affectionate to someone or something, doesn't matter whom or what. This is what I meant by a nagging feeling more than anything.

Policy is a whole 'nother deal, let them marry, have the same rights, shit what do I care, they are adults making their own decisions. If they are happy, I'm happy.

I'll admit I cherry pick from my theology. I'll love my neighbor as ordered, forgive as it says, respect life, etc.. But I won't stone unfaithful women or gays or start wars over the religion.

Again, these are my beliefs, I won't enforce or impose them on anyone or try to regulate policy, I'm just as wrong/right as the next guy, so why even bother? A candidate is giving breaks in my tax bracket while the other is trying to ban gay marriage? I'll be voting with the one that's saving me money every time.

PS: I'd like to apologize to Hrvatica beforehand.
Can't we all just get along?

Why would you want to close it? are you afraid of knowledge and ideas?. I hate it when people try to stop a conversation because we have to watch peoples feelings, we are not insulting anyone, we are not passing judgments at all, we are just looking at the evidence that religion offers and the conclusion we can draw from it.(If you ask me it is not much)

I am going to try to school you all. Evolution has been pretty much proven, the only people fighting about the facts are illiterate, well kind of, I am sure they can read and write, but they only read what they want to read because it comforts' them and that is not really reading just picking the cherry and eating it. I am sure everyone here has been in a biology classroom, me personally I taken a science class every year since elementary school. I am sure we had all seen this kids who are obviously christian, I say christian because I know for a fact that that is what the majority of people in this country believe in, they walk out of class because their parents told the teacher that they did not want their kids expose to such blasphemy, assholes, what are they so afraid of their kids seen? if religion is base on that much truth, facts and evidence that can with stand anything, why would they mine this? do they not believe in freedom of ideas?. The four main and I am sure they are the largest religions, you know what I am going to just call them cults, the largest cults are judaism, christianity, islam and the mormons, since evolution is true and everyone can agree because of the abundance of evidence that we have, we can draw the conclusion that all this cults are wrong as the origin of humans, since we know that this gods did not create the universe because they don't exist, they are nothing but made up stories and nothing more. Intelligent design is borderline absurd, it's supported by the most outrageously crazy and unintelligent people in the world. I don't know if you guys know this but intelligent design is supported by just christian who want to see their bullshit thought in school. About a few years ago in southern seattle a church was trying to persuade the school board to teach intelligent design in school as a science(Jesus christ are this people suppose to be out the mad house) they broad how noah ark could be a fact and so on, my teacher told me what they were trying to do so I wanted to go and support them in the protest against such stupidity, me and my friend went. I got the chance to talk in front of the school board since we were among a small group of high school students there, incredible I know *Sarcasm*, I actually was prepare to talk. I broad up the argument of teaching satanism, the expression on their faces was priceless, it was like "How fucking dare you bring such thing here" I was not scare of this fuckers since this guys look like the last time they exercise was when pangaea was a continent, I can proudly say I was beyond better shape than them. I was actually afraid of getting into a fight since we all know that this people sort to violence when they know they are losing a intellectual "battle" they just can not wait to punch me for jesus. The reason why I had broad up the church of satanism to be thought is because it is basically the same foundation but with a different twist in the philosophy, the guy who was the head of the school board ask me why it should be thought, I told him "I think if we are to learn about the bible, we should learn about other religions, I propose that we teach satanism since it goes right on target in intelligent design" I was proud of myself because I knew I school every single fucker in their own fucking irony. After I sat down a lady got up to speak, she said this "I think that satanism is not necessary to be thought, SINCE IT DOES NOT HOLD ANY SCIENTIFIC VALUE" the caps are just to emphasize of the stupidity of this woman and not the fact that she said this loudly and proudly like a dumb bitch, as well as the rest of creationist in there because they fucking clap right after the bitch was done saying that. Well end of story, intelligent design is retarded, btw we won, the school board rejected the idea of teaching intelligent design in the school district. but if you know what I am trying to imply is that logic it self can disprove religion.

As for the big bang, I am sure it happen, we do not know what caused it but we cannot draw a silly little assumption to think that higher beings did it. We all thought that the world was flat and the sun was god not so fucking long ago, now we actually know of what it is and why it isn't. it is only a matter time before we know what actually happen in the beginning, if there was ever a beginning. You cannot go around branding crap with god because there is no answer to it just yet. I don't know if you have heard but apparently you haven't, it is possible that we are not the only universe, and I am not talking about parallel universe, I am talking about universes right next to us that have been created by other big bangs and so on, they are a lot more universes, this could go on for ever if you are understanding what I am saying, we could never know if all this just happen or it was created and the meaning of life is what you want it to be, putting a imaginary man above it all is just irrational and sad, enjoy your life, is the only one you get.
