Please help with this by making a quick phone call and sending an even quicker email. And it would be great if you could forward this message to your Illinois networks. Tomorrow morning, the Cook County Board will vote on an historic bill that would end ICE detainers in Cook County. It is a common-sense solution that is long overdue: * It saves County taxpayers $15.7 million per year, money that we need for essential services that are being cut. * It makes us safer by rebuilding the trust between police and immigrants and by allowing funds to be spent on the most dangerous criminals. * It protects families that have been targeted by immigration dragnet programs. But the Anti's are lying about us and lying about the ordinance, and they will continue to lie about us until we speak up. On websites like this one (http://www.wbez.org/story/cook-count...#comment-34350), They're saying the bill frees criminals and doesn't comply with federal laws. they The ordinance does not free criminals; it says we should trust the protections - high bond, Cook County Jail, our court systems - already in place to protect us from dangerous criminals. And, Buqer v. City of Indianapolis, a recent federal court case ruled that ICE Detainers are not criminal warrants; that means there is no federal law requiring counties to uphold them. You have 24 hours to STOP THE LIES and take action: 1) Call your Commissioner RIGHT NOW and say: "I am asking you to vote YES on Commissioner Garcia's ICE Detainer ordinance and end the unfunded mandates from ICE." Phone numbers for your commissioners can be found at: http://www.cookcountygov.com/portal/...226/leadership. 2) Visit http://action.icirr.org/p/dia/action...ction_KEY=4704 and send a free e-mail to your commissioner, and to Sheriff Dart, President Preckwinkle, and States Attorney Alvarez. 3) Come to our press conference with Commissioner Garcia at 2pm tomorrow at Cook County Building (Randolph and Clark), 5th Floor. Please arrive between 1 and 2pm. 4) Forward this message to your lists.
