Yes that is an excessive punishment. No doubt about it.

But "shall be put to death" doesn't specify who will do the killing or when.

Everyone shall be put to death, sooner or later.

I'd personally would love to have a mandated day off.

I know that if I keep working without day off, I'd most likey die early of some illness. So in essence, I am being put to death, albeit at a later date.

were people actually executed for breaking (Exodus 31:14-15) ?

Yes, according to biblical accounts, individuals were executed for violating the Sabbath as prescribed in Exodus 31:14–15. A notable example is found in Numbers 15:32–36, where a man was caught gathering wood on the Sabbath. The community brought him before Moses and Aaron, and after seeking God's guidance, they were instructed to stone him to death outside the camp, which they did.

However, such executions appear to have been rare. Some scholars suggest that while the law mandated the death penalty for Sabbath desecration, it was infrequently enforced. Nehemiah, for instance, attributed the Babylonian exile in part to the Israelites' failure to observe the Sabbath, implying that widespread non-compliance occurred without corresponding executions.

In summary, while the law prescribed death for Sabbath violations and there are recorded instances of such executions, historical evidence suggests that enforcement was not consistent, and the prescribed penalty was not always carried out.

I only listen to the new testament. So far haven't seen a convincing argument for why the old.

"Same line"
"Same god"

New is new.
