Change.org:
CURRENTLY: You can sign the letter to be sent to your representatives in order to inform them about the DREAM Act. Do so HERE.
Change.org has pledged to pass on the top 10 ideas on the site to Obama on Inauguration day. They have implemented a two-round voting system, round one ends on January 5th. The top three winners from each category then face off against each other and the top 10 ideas are the winners. In addition to getting the ideas to Obama, change.org has pledged to help in forming a national campaign for the issues. WE ARE ONE OF THE TOP 10 IDEAS FEATURED BY CHANGE.ORG.
-12,690 members for the DREAM Act and growing. Great space to use to build our movement. Make sure to invite your friends.
-There is a share your story project that Verve handles. PM or email him at [email protected] We should be able to get a story from every state, and of course, all sorts of countries.
Tools available
· Guest blog – Coalition members as well as undocumented students can participate via this by sending us their 'blog post' (200 to 400 words) or post on their own blogs and give us a heads-up for cross-linking. Issues don't have to be limited to the DREAM Act – as long as it is related to undocumented students, it should be fit for posting.
· Flip camera – In conjunction with TakePart.com, currently in the Bay Area. Available to record grassroots organizing efforts. Check back for updates / uploads soon and send us ideas as to what you would like to see covered in the videos. We'll probably start with weekly updates as to what is happening around the country and short interview pieces with student activists.
· Democracy in Action – email petition to Congress and Representatives that should be up for the DREAM Act around Feb 25. There can also be separate actions started for say in-state tuition funding etc. We just did one for Arpaio -
http://immigration.change.org/action...on_he_deserves
You can help us by adding actions on the DREAM Act blog.
· Videos – Users can also upload their videos so all videos are in one place and easily accessible. And each week we can feature a new one.
To add a video - http://www.change.org/videos/add_video?change_id=2707
Besides these things, Change.org can promote our posts, actions, and campaign on the homepage when we have a major piece of news to break, and give us periodic mentions in their newsletter that goes out to 500,000 members.
DREAM Act Postcards:
(one of the two cards being used)
Last year we sent in more than 600 post cards, lets beat that number this year.
The idea is to write your story as if you are inviting the senator to your graduation party. If, once DREAM becomes a reality, you are planning on going the military route -or you are not in school right now- then frame your invitation as such. Below are two examples from the previous campaign:
Example 1: "You're Cordially Invited To My D.R.E.A.M.: Senator, on Sunday, May 17th, 2009, I will be graduating near the top of my class with a degree in Bioengineering. I hope to use my education to conduct research in the field of cancer medicine. I would love to one day pursue a medical Ph.D and work for the National Institute of Health. None of this can happen without your much needed support. Please help me make D.R.E.A.M. a reality.
Sincerely,
<Signed First Name>
Example 2: Honorable Senator ________: I am a high school graduate. During the last four years of my public education I was very involved in various extracurricular activities such as Students for Environment Action, Animal Rights club, Dance team and key club.
During College, I plan to major in elementary education. My DREAM is to one day become an elementary school teacher and be very involved in volunteering around my community.
Unfortunately, I am unable to do so as a result of my immigration status. This is why I am urging you to support the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act. With you help and support I will be able to realize my DREAM of becoming an active member of society.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
<Signed First Name>
Please include where you were born and how long you have been here.
The deadline is as follows:
Stories are due no later than, Monday, December 29th. This should give everyone time to work on a story either after finals week or, if you are normal and you like to procrastinate, after the holidays.
All text submissions must go to [email protected]
Letters / E-Mails / Faxes:
In addition to sending the text for the postcard you are always welcome to send in letters, E-Mails or faxes. We will be publishing a directory specifically for the people we want to target as the mail in date gets closer so keep an eye out for that.
The Faces of DREAM:
DREAM recipients are a diverse bunch and we would like to showcase this. We are asking that you submit a picture (baby picture preferred) with a quick caption mentioning where you are from and how long you have lived in the US. This will then be posted on the DREAMactivist.org site (under the "about us" tab).
This is an ongoing project so no set deadline, but please don't put it off... get it over with now.
DREAMies for Interview:
Another ongoing project is collecting information from DREAMies who are willing to be interviewed by the media. Please check out this page for more information and sample entries. If you are willing to do this please make sure you keep in touch with us about any updated/changed contact information.
Current list can be found here.
