Graham, Lindsey R-SC

When they don't accept your mail, they forward it to the senator who represents the state from which the postcard was sent.

So, 15 postcards per week, not 20
how will they know if we're outside their constituency if we don't put a return address? I'm not planing on to for mine prob just my state don't know yet. I'm going to send out a lot and i don't want they all to have the same address i want them to think that they're from different persons =). going to buy mine today!

Check this out, for your convenience!

Take into account the post above that says that certain senators wont accept out of their range or whatnot.

I agree! How do we know? Thanks for bringing this up myloveisaverb. I'd imagine even without a return address the post office machine might stamp it with the state and might give it away... Perhaps we can send the post cards in an envelope to a member (pre stamped of course) and they can drop in a mailbox?

Hey everyone!

I stumbled upon an article online regarding the DREAM Act and the author was actually quite optimistic about the passage of it this year. He did mention this:

The DREAM Act has strong backing from unions, religious leaders and, of course, the country's growing (and voting) immigrant community. But the most important support group could be college and university presidents. After all, every member of Congress is an alumni of some college.

Want the DREAM Act passed? Go lobby your local college or university president. Tell him or her to make passing the DREAM Act a priority.

So, my question is, do you all think it would be a good idea to write letters (or maybe even send postcards) to the presidents of whatever school we are attending to ask them to support this act?

That is a good idea to send letters to university presidents. This kind of unothrodox campaigning is what is going to make 2009 different from 2007.

I called my senators today and I understand clearly the benefit of putting pressure or informing our senators through postcards, fax and calls and I will continue to do so.

However, we have to ask ourselves objectively whether all of that would be enough or do we have to also incorporate the current political and media climate in our strategy. I am impressed with the enthusiasm and action of the group and I will also next week get some index cards to do my part

BUT, I am concerned with the overarching strategy to get the dream act passed this year. I read historical posts about the letter writing campaign to Oprah that proved unsuccessful and all the correspondence and even meetings between dreamers and senators in 2007.

THIS IS A POLITICAL ISSUE. The opposition is not yet galvanized but would soon become vocal and use their very impressive strategy of oversimplifying the issue and framing it as SHOULD WE REWARD ILLEGALS IMMIGRANT STUDENTS? If that is the question that gets asked on TV or remains in the consciousness of the american public I do not see how the majority of senators would vote for the dream act. Hence in my opinion getting the right frame is the most important part of our cause.

Remember 2002, 2004 elections, the democrats always had the most intelligent, nuanced and practical views on issues that would have benefited the country but the republicans won because they had the better frame, were more organized and repeated their simple homely assertions over and over again till the american public voted out of fear.

The democrats won in 2006, 2008 not because they had the most intelligent arguments and policies(they always did) but because the communicated it better and were better organized. Barack won because he had the simple message of change we can believe in that was constantly reinforced and he won the framing P.R battle.

I understand that calling and writing senators should not be neglected and I will join that effort BUT PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE TO GO TO PROVIDE SOME OF MY MEDIA AND POLITICAL IDEAS.

Let me end by referencing BONO- Americans do not get convinced based on sympathy or reason but based on reminding them of the greatness and uniqueness of America.

I believe that is true and we should use that as a linch pin for our message.

"America is respected in the world for its just treatment of children and its unparalleled commitment to human rights. Passing the Dream Act in 2009 not only acknowledges the immigrant history of this great country but further proves that America is once again the paragon of freedom and liberty.

Connecticut Senators and Reps are supportive.

One last thing. We should zealously advocate for comprehensive immigration reform by the end of summer (August) but send signals that passing the dream act in the meantime is a COMPROMISE that we are willing to stomach.

IT WOULD BE VERY SAD IF AFTER THE DREAM ACT PASSES- the folks on this board will abandon the issue because they will not be beneficiaries of further reform. I doubt it but I had to say it.

I look forward to your ideas and responses.

I'm going to throw this in here again, hopefully someone can benefit from it. I have pretty crummy hand writing, so typing things out will actually make it legible.

Post Card template.doc

Your welcomed to use this yourself exactly how it is. Or steal my ideas, steal my format, steal my arrangement, anything to help Make sure you put the address on it (either by typing it or by hand, although typing it might be nice)

Its preset on 4" x 6" index cards... you might be able to double side print, but my printer jammed when I tried to feed it. I ended up feeding 1 card at a time, printing 1 side then printing the other side, feeding 1 card at a time.

Refer to your printing manual!

I think it is definitely a good idea to send postcards to your senator as well if you can.

On the original post of the thread, I posted a link to a website which lists senators' addresses, and also, I posted a link to rompirate's word doc. list which you can download and print.

The offices will know which state the postcard is coming from because all delivered mail gets stamped with a postage which indicates the zipcode of the area from which the mail was sent, and in some cases the city and state is included as well. Look at mail that has been sent to your house and you'll see what I'm talking about.

At this point what's most important is that the postcards get sent out once per week...We have enough participants now that we don't have to be particularly concerned with the days people are sending them, because we all live in different parts of the country, so there is no way to really make sure that we send an equal or close to equal distribution each day.

I think everyone knows what needs to be done. I'll pm everyone next week to tally how many we've all sent for the first week. Post design ideas if you have any.
