Michael Cohen is prepared to cooperate with investigators against President Trump and has hired a former high-ranking federal prosecutor to represent him, according to reports Tuesday. Trump’s longtime personal lawyer “knows a lot of things about the president and he’s not averse to talking in the right situation,” a friend who’s in touch with Cohen told CNN. “If they want information on Trump, he’s willing to give it,” the pal added. Cohen — who reportedly parted ways with his current defense lawyers last week — is replacing them with Guy Petrillo, a former chief of the Criminal Division of the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office, two people with knowledge of the situation told Vanity Fair. Court records show Cohen is still officially represented by attorneys from the firm of McDermott, Will & Emery, and Petrillo didn’t immediately return requests for comment. The Manhattan US Attorney’s office is investigating Cohen over his pre-election payment of $130,000 to silence porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had an affair with Trump in 2006. As part of the probe, FBI agents on April 9 seized more than a dozen electronic devices from Cohen’s office, home and hotel room in what Trump called an “attack on our country in a true sense.” Prosecutors began investigating Cohen in an offshoot of US Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into suspected collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia ahead of the 2016 presidential election. |
