GOP vows to defeat articles of impeachment
Republicans in the United States Senate vowed to defeat articles of impeachment against US President Donald Trump if they are passed by the Democrat-controlled House. "If it's based on the Mueller report or anything like that, it would be quickly disposed of," said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, according to the Hill.
Texas Senator John Cornyn added that Democrats "know what the outcome would be," which is why "all they want to do is talk about it." The Senate, where Republicans hold 53 seats, would need a two-thirds majority to convict Trump. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has the authority to set the rules of the impeachment trial, in which House lawmakers act as prosecutors. However, as long as the GOP majority backs McConnell, he could block witnesses or evidence.
