What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?

An ITIN is predominantly used for tax purposes. People who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number, but need to file taxes or for other tax purposes, can apply for an ITIN and use it when they file their yearly tax return. It it NOT a substitute for a SSN, therefore you cannot legally work using an ITIN; you must have a SSN to do that.

ITINs are also used to open bank accounts, apply for credit cards and can even be used to get a cell phone account. Although these things are possible, not every institution will allow it.

No one should be surprised to see the left trying to move piecemeal legislation along the lines of AgJOBS and the DREAM Act. Last year, those bills were designed to grant stealth amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants in specific categories: farm workers and those who claim to have come to the U.S. illegally as minors. Has Obama forgotten immigration?

Quote:

immigration is the elephant in the room that cannot be ignored, especially not by the president. Obama is going to deal with it, and probably sooner than later in his term.
Think about it. After winning two-thirds of the Latino vote last November, and after promising the Congressional Hispanic, Black and Asian Pacific American caucuses a strict but immigrant-friendly immigration law, is it really likely that Obama would turn away from immigration so early in his term? The answer, of course, is no.
