Senator DeWine had the opportunity to meet with Manuel Bartsch on Wednesday, May 24th. In April 2006, Senator DeWine introduced a private relief bill that would give permanent resident status to Manuel, an 18 year-old German citizen who lives in Gilboa, Ohio. Manuel has lived in the United States for years with his step-grandfather, and did not know that his step-grandfather never filed the proper paperwork to legalize his status until last year. During their visit, Senator DeWine and Manuel discussed the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2005. This bill--co-sponsored by Senator DeWine--would remove current education barriers on immigrant children who have spent most of their lives in the United States.
