Move on Lunafiv, you deserve better, walk and when you're strong enough run and don't look back.

He says he still talks to me because he cares and loves me but he doesn't believe we have a future together because of all the problems. He says he's tired of fighting and that he knows things won't get any better if we were to get married. I told him I thought we could still make it work, etc and then he just said thanks for giving me a chance to "work out" my feelings.

I wasn't the perfect girlfriend, I did some things that hurt him a lot, but I didn't do anything outrageous. I know he's hurt.

The problem here is that I don't think he really believes me and that makes me feel so frustrated. But sometimes I can't help but think I'm his new backup (which is super depressing after all these years).

From what we've talked he says I should give him time to process everything and "work out" his feelings. But I can't stop thinking about this new girl.

You have to stop worrying about what HE thinks, that's all you've been doing. A relationship is a two way street, it's funny that while he's ''working out his feelings'' he's also out hanging out with another chick. You need to take a huge step back and away from him, sometimes things become way clearer when you do so. Since he doesn't see a future with you, stop wasting time with him and treat him like you would an acquaintance.

I think its time to let go. This is a relationship. It's a two person commitment...

Keeping an ex as a friend never works, unless the ex was not serious, as voiced by the other posters here. But you guys were serious, you will always have feelings for this guy, you have a history together. Keeping an ex as a friend is very unfair to your future partner. Do you know why you don't like other guys right now? Because your feelings are still heavily invested with your ex. And they will be until you cut off all communication with him.

So, let him know it's all or nothing. That's the deal. He can't just keep 20% of you around for his sake.

Anyways, that's my take. Others are welcome to pitch in. Also how old are you guys?

I'm in my mid-20s and he's early-30s. We talked about marriage, kids, all that... He was very serious about it, way more serious than me. I feel like I'm the one who blew it... Anyway, I will just give him some time and if he doesn't want a relationship, I will tell him that even if I love him I can't be his friend (which is what he wants).
