Re: Reid Dashes Hope Of Quick Work On Immigration Reform

This was predicted. It just means not before Memorial Day that is around the corner. The goal is to pass this before the mid-term elections.

Not necessarily.

CIR could be discussed before the elections and passed in the subsequent lame duck session. Outgoing legislators would have absolutely nothing to lose. Not that this is the best case scenario, but it's certainly an option.

If they don't start work till Memorial Day, a bill won't come to the floor weeks/ months until after that... which is too late for a vote before mid-terms, because no one is gonna go for that vote so close to the election.

IMHO, they are moderately serious about getting a floor vote in both houses of congress in December, during the lame duck session, so that retirees and those voted out of office can vote their hearts and others have a loooong time before they have to run again. The 1986 bill was passed with this timing. The sun seems to be setting quickly on a pre-midterms vote, and that might mean getting a more favorable bill in the end, with less enforcement/ criminalization to make it politically more palatable.

Re: Reid Dashes Hope Of Quick Work On Immigration Reform

Immigration will be done by Fall ('09)
Immigration must be done in the small window of opportunity in Feb/March '10
Immigration Bill must be brought to a vote by the end of April '10
Immigration (we hope) might be done in the Summer '10
Immigration will be best after the elections (this is the stupidest idea yet. Yeah, the more potential Republicans in Congress, the bigger chance CIR has of passing! From what pipe are you all smoking?)...

The Senate and president found time to bail out the crooks in Wall Street that ruined the country and cost millions their jobs; pulled drilling 0ff-shore out of the proverbial nothing as it really accomplishes nothing, but you cannot legalize millions and add them to the taxpayer base for much needed revenue?

In the meantime, waiting has given us another terrorist attempt in December of last year; lost of control of the Senate in January; LAME health-insurance reform; and the most awesome of all, another Supreme Court fight looming ahead. Sure, we should let the pressure down. Who doesn't want to wait for the next criminal to come unhinged on a plane or subway? Because you know, then it will be a good time to legalize foreigners. The Democrats are all idiots.

Harry Reid needs to stop flip flopping on immigration reform

Memo to Harry Reid: It's time to stop flip flopping on immigration reform.

You can't go telling a huge rally in your home state one thing (that immigration reform is on the Senate's agenda) and then saying another thing Tuesday in D.C. (that immigration reform is off the Senate's agenda.)

Make your mind up Harry.

You can't have it both ways.

On Saturday you wanted the Latino vote and Tuesday you want what exactly?

Reid was speaking Tuesday after the Democratic caucus luncheons.

"We have a lot of work to do," Reid said. "And we're dealing, everyone has to understand, with a party of no, that they're trying to stop everything."

We get that Harry.

But if the Republicans are "the party of no," what are the Democrats?

The party of "wait your turn for another 10 years?"

"We won't get to immigration reform this work period," he said.

Well that's not what you said Saturday Harry when you boosted the hopes of millions with your much publicized remarks in Nevada.

Just in case you've forgotten, here's a sound bite.

“We need to do this this year...We cannot wait.”

“We’re going to pass immigration reform, just as we passed health care reform."

So which is it Harry?

I think it all comes down to one thing, progress !

There have been no immigration hearings at all this year to even publicly showcase they are trying & one can only punt so many times a year unless one is into golf.I think when the Democrats didn't initiate anything seriously in Committee[like a mark-up] early in the last session they simply weren't serious because Immigration imo is far more complicated than healthcare.

At the end of the day, Sen. Reid's office put out their own press release to clarify the Senator's remarks:
REID SPOKESMAN: IMMIGRATION REFORM IS A PRIORITY FOR THE SENATE
Washington, D.C. -José Dante Parra, spokesman for Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement today restating Sen. Reid's strong commitment to have immigration reform legislation brought to the U.S. Senate floor this Congress:

"Sen. Reid has been consistent for months about his desire to pass an immigration reform bill that is tough, fair and practical. At the beginning of this Congress, Sen. Reid included immigration reform among the Senate's top priorities and that is where such reform remains. This reform must include strong and effective enforcement of our borders; a requirement that immigrants here illegally register with the government, learn English, pay taxes, pass criminal background checks, and get in the back of the line to earn legalization; and punish unscrupulous employers who abuse immigrants and undercut American workers.
"On Saturday in Nevada, he reaffirmed his unyielding support for such a bill. His commitment remains as firm today as it was Saturday, as it was in January of last year, and as it has been over the years he has taken on the challenge of fixing our broken system. Make no mistake, as soon as he gets a bill from Sens. Schumer, Graham and the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Reid will bring immigration reform to the floor of the U.S. Senate, and hopes Republicans will join Democrats in doing what's right for our country."

Senator Reid is saying that immigration won't be talked about until June/early July, hence his statement, "we won't get to immigration reform in this work period."

Quote:

The “work period” Mr. Reid mentioned referred to the seven-week stretch until Memorial Day that will most likely be dominated by a major fight over new rules governing the financial services industry and stalled White House nominations.

I think the bill is ready, it probably need some touch ups. They have been working on it for a while.

Was there as much support in 1986 as we do in the recent years?

I believe the voting results in the Senate were pretty darn close. I don't remember the exact voting results in the Senate or House though.
