Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), who co-sponsored the DREAM Act, said he would not vote for cloture because he had about 15 objections to the defense package. But he indicated he would support the DREAM Act amendment should it come to a vote.

I believe Collins said something similar in a different article.

The DA having to be voted on with DADT was probably the worst thing that could have happened to it.

I personally don't really care for DADT since I do not belong to either group influenced by it, but if the armed forces brass wants to survey the troops first then let them. I can understand if the society wants to be progressive but expecting that from the military, by introducing an amendment to a bill, is just wishful thinking.

Not to mention that it is not like they run a test on you that says that you're gay or not, and prevents you from enlisting. You can keep it to yourself for as long as you serve (and don't start telling me that it's hard and you shouldn't have to to it. Most of us here have kept our status to ourselves for 15+ years) , because frankly, one's sexual preference should have no place in the armed forces, and the only time it is even mentioned is when it comes to morale and simple soldier to soldier communication.

It wasn't the dream act they were voting down. It was other things. And honestly, I take Bennett at his word. He's been a yes vote before and has nothing to lose this time.

Okay, so all these senators who say they would vote for DREAM as a standalone... what about senators who voted for the defense bill but oppose DREAM?

Stop calling today's vote a vote on DREAM Act!! Today's vote was on cloture for the defense bill.

Reid said that if passed, he would then attach DREAM as an amendment. DREAM hasn't been voted up or down yet. This is all a political game; Sen. Bennett waited until a fail on cloture earlier today to profess to the press that he supports the DA? Give me a f***ing break.

As of now, the DoD bill does not contain the legislation for DreamAct. Read the bill and you will see it's not there. I think the trick was to gain voter support (and more Hispanic backing) for November and beyond. I read the following on "The Hill" today; notice the time it was posted:

Senate Dems consider early exit
By Alexander Bolton - 09/21/10 01:01 PM ET

Senate Democrats are seriously weighing whether to leave town at the end of next week, instead of staying in session until Oct. 7 or Oct. 8, as had been anticipated

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Democrats might pass a stop-gap spending measure to keep government funded beyond Sept. 30 and then go back to their home states to campaign...

“We have a very limited amount of time,” Durbin told reporters. “In fact, we may only have another week or ten days before we adjourn, and I know we have to pass a continuing resolution and there will be other issues that come up.”

Durbin was not optimistic that lawmakers would spend much more time on the defense bill before the election if the effort to kill the GOP filibuster fails.

“If we fail today, whether or not we can get back to this bill will depend on whether some agreement can be reached with Republicans very quickly,” he said.

This was reported a full 1 1/2 hours before the cloture vote, which makes me believe they knew it would fail. If DA is delayed until the lame duck session, I bet you anything, that then they will say it will have to be included in the CIR bill to make it pass.

But lets put this into context, what are the chances that the DREAM Act will com up as a stand alone bill anytime soon?

The thing about this abortion at a military base is that the abortion is funded by the private sector not the government.
