Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!

I don't believe higher education should be tied to the DREAM act. College is just a means to an end for some and for many DREAMers it will simply be a waste of time and money, particularly when you consider that many DREAMers are already content with their blue-collar jobs, have no academic disposition, and have no intention of ever getting a prestigious desk job because that's what they've learned from their parents. CIR's bill already addresses the problems of not having enough college graduates working in STEM fields by importing them from abroad. Unfortunately, the final version of the DREAM act that makes it inside the CIR bill will have that higher education requirement since that's what it takes to get greater support from both sides.

What all this means is that a lot of DREAMers, who already live in low-income households and who are not even guaranteed to get federal aid because the House is likely to reject Sen. Hirono's amendment, will be more likely to end up with student debt like the 2/3s of college graduates who already do so since it will become much harder to pay for these expenses out of pocket.

"I just wanted to become a plumber with a green card and now I am $25k in debt. Hey, at least I can quote Shakespeare's characters."

This is a retarded amendment.. You gotta ask yourself, what are the negatives of immigration? People being a burden on the government. That's it.. That is literally the only risk involved in legalizing foreigners..

Dreamers came here as kids, went to school here (an education already provided at tax payer expense) why the hell would you give them such a hard time getting legalized? We're not going to be a burden on tax payers we're not undocumented people looking to abuse the system or milking it with anchor babies.. 2 years towards a bachelor is more than enough.. This bill is getting retarded to the point where I hope it doesn't even pass.. I'd rather just marry my girlfriend and not have to meet these ridiculous requirements and live my life

And just for the record, I'm more than halfway through my 4 year degree but I know there are many of us who aren't fortunate enough to afford a 4 year education.

I am not sure if I will be able to pull off graduating in 5 years, who knows what financial burdens may arise for me.

Also, if they start saying that only certain colleges count, then I'm screwed...lol...for me its CUNY or bust...

As for CIR at this point...I am starting not to care much anymore...worse case scenario I work here a couple of years and then relocate...accept life for what is, and appreciate whatever I am able to accomplish and try to survive for as long as possible.

Fuck...I just graduated high school in May. I hope the amendment doesn't pass, because I'm not sure if I can pull that shit off.

Seems fair to have it. Otherwise you get a bunch of lazy people who want to get their papers on the back of deserving Dreamers. It'd be like those assholes who come here with a student visa and only take one class each semester to keep their student status and end up staying here 15 years while they party with their rich parents' money and eventually marry and get their green card and never finish school.

Before you say "you don't need college to be successful", that's what CIR is for. Wait your 15 years like the other ditch diggers. The bill doesn't even say you have to go to a 4 year university. You could go to a community college and learn AC repair if you want.

I don't think this amendment is fair. There are kids who work professionally at a very young age (sportsmen, musicians, actors, etc.) who might have such a hard time getting to the next level in their career without green card, but according to this amendment they will not be eligible until they finish college? So should they all just put their developing career on hold until then? This is absurd...

some of these responses boggle my mind. If it takes a degree from an accredited University to be eligible, then by all means...sign me up. No offense, but you guys sound like you're entitled to be a Dream Act candidate because you've involuntarily been put in this situation. Well lemme tell you: You aren't entitled for sh***ttt!!! The world is unfair and we all know this from the stupid politics that have surrounded our lives for about a decade now.

For me, this is the hand that I've been dealt and I've gotta do what I gotta do. Again, i f a degree is what it takes, then it's a degree that I'll go out and get. Stop complaining and realize you don't always get what you want.

either you have a STEM degree or you don't qualify. Now that would be fair. Generous to be honest

I am not a dreamer, but this is a bullshit demand.

The whole thing that makes dreamers special is not that they went to college, but that they unwittingly broke the law and they became in effect Americans without papers; you can't punish kids for the sins of their fathers. That's why even Republicans recognize that they deserve better treatment than then general population.

Now, for the American state to turn around and say "well, tough break kid you got transported against your will and put in that situation, but I will only give you special status if you graduate college" is utterly unfair and unreasonable.

I value college education as much as anyone. But not everyone wants to or can afford to get it. College education has no relation to the reason Dreamers deserve special treatment.

So, it's bullshit. Another poison pill/unrealistic demand.

I am loving this article. So a Dreamer who already have a degree will just wait 5 years?
