Re: Migrant Children Deserve TPS [Opinion]

I love how quick people are to forget their roots. Does the phrase "its not my fault, my parents made me do it!" sound familiar?

How many of you have used this as your saving grace against any hostility? Even if it were to help explain things in a way to a friend that makes you seem less criminal with respect to the stigma that comes with the illegal in illegal immigrant (most people, the media especially, don't have the courtesy to call us "undocumented" or "unauthorized" migrants)

Being in a position where they had no say in the matter is what these kids are facing at the moment. While I can't say honestly whether or not they should be allowed to "stay," it is my understanding that finding the origins and families of some of these kids is rather difficult. Making repatriating them more even more so.

More complicated cases obviously need to offer different concessions, foster care perhaps. But then you have another problem - folks purposefully dodging attempts to relocate their children in an effort to get them to stay.

Its harsh but in the end I think think all these kids need to be repatriated - barring some who already have family here (even if not immediate family). Not because they are screwing things up for us, but its the most sensible thing to do. Allowing them all to stay would create a more hostile market for smuggling kids. (the more who are in the market, the greater the number who are at risk for exploitation by the various smuggling channels.)

This is what I think the administration is trying to avoid. Six months from now there could be another crisis of this magnitude or worse because smugglers can go back Central America and tell families of their success getting these kids to stay even though the government wanted to send them home.

As much as I feel like these children should be helped, I'm not naive enough to think this administration will do it.

I'm sure these kids are all angels but they screwed us over royally. Last year we had the Boston bombing to deal with, this year we have these kids to deal with.

Any damage these children caused has already been done. It isn't like this is new - what is shocking was the relatively large increase. Most of them have family here, and indeed a good chunk came to reunite with family. Redesignating Honduras-El Salvador and adding Guatemala to the list of TPS eligible countries would be the best option Obama has. Its certainly better than sending them back to violent countries where they might have no family leftover in.

Oh no, this is the gift that's going to keep on giving and will be the biggest issue in the mid-term election. These kids just got here so what do you mean they don't have a country to go back to? They forgot Spanish in the last 3 weeks all of a sudden and forgot how things work over there?
