So this is what my plan was. Portuguese is similar to spanish and I can understand what people are saying at this point right now. I just can't speak it. I have a year left of uni so that is enough time to be able to speak it.

I'm Filipino, I got a 2+ on the Korean DLPT (which is enough to get you into MAVNI), not sure how I would've done on the OPI though..

DLPT - Defense Language Proficiency Test (3 hours reading comprehension, 3 hours listening, done on the computer at MEPS)

OPI - Oral Proficiency Interview

When the Air Force was recruiting for MAVNI, they were only recruiting certain languages with a specific # of positions--ONE position for Korean was one of those.

I am Filipino, so I speak Tagalog, but I also know Korean. I talked to two Air Force recruiters before they decided to let me take the test (Air Force was doing DLPT instead of OPI for some reason), and I passed with a 2+. Since I passed, I went on to do medical, but an actual Korean guy was recruited (from our same recruitment center).

I went to the Army Reserve and they had initially said that since I already passed the Korean DLPT, there was no need to take the Tagalog/Korean OPI (Army does OPI instead of DLPT, both these languages were open for Army MAVNI)--but in the end, they made me take the Tagalog OPI before enlistment.

My understanding is that in order to qualify for a certain language, you need to be from a country where it is spoken. For example, if you want to qualify through Chinese, you need be from China. In your case, you would need to from a Portuguese speaking-country. I suggest you confirm this with a recruiter.

It will suck if you put lots effort learning Portuguese and find out you don't qualify. This is assuming MAVNI will reopen.

That is false info, there are plenty of people who speak more than 2-3 language fluently, and have qualified via the language of choice. I think what you may have heard is that because some languages require indepth knowledge of the culture to converse, it'd help to be actually from that country, but it's not an absolutely requirement.
