Re: White House says Obama is ‘looking forward’ to executive action on immigration
I have nearly 15 years of well documented residency here, and I will gladly pay any back taxes that i owe. In fact, i tried getting an ITIN to do that a few years back and i was unsuccessful. A lot of applicants get denied simply because the IRS may believe you're trying to use the ITIN for other purposes like opening a bank account, getting a driver's license, etc., as opposed to getting one because you want to actually pay taxes. I was trying to get it for both purposes, hoping that it would help me in the future as well.

Re: White House says Obama is ‘looking forward’ to executive action on immigration
Obama Has a big surprise in store for his EO, no one even knows what it will contain, which to me means he is going to piss off the immigration community. We are now in the second week of Nov, not one leaked memo out lining who will be eligible. I could see the AG workers, some sort of change to the visa law and something with marriage to a USC or LPR. This is just to hush hush and 10 years in the country providing proof .. I bet he throws some sort of fee and or have been paying taxes for x amount of years into the loop. Which would rule my mom out.

And I agree. I thought at this point, there would be some information leaked to us. Anything! I am hoping the 2 million was just a talking point (since that's a number Jorge Ramos suggested some estimates are) and not an actual figure being considered by the administration. I estimated in a another post that approximately 5 million people could benefit, including the parents of DACA beneficiaries, based on some 2012 numbers of undocumented immigrants. However, I could see that number still including long term residents (non-DACA DREAMers), parents of USCs, parents of DACA beneficiaries, and spouses of USCs/LPRs who have been here for 10+ years (About 3.1 million). The vast majority of the undocumented population recent immigrated. As of 2012, " 62 percent of undocumented immigrants have been living in the United States for 10 years or longer." Source |

See, a lot of undocumented people received an ITIN from when they were infants and their parents applied for it listing their children as dependents. Therefore, these people can file taxes that way easily. Some of us didn't get so lucky. I started working in January of 2003, like a lot of people, using a made up SSN and a different last name to somewhat protect my identity; and as much as i would like to pay those taxes, i can't really file them that way. I wonder if some people do or try to. I attempted to obtain an ITIN years ago and failed. I explained on another thread how the IRS sometimes thinks you're trying to obtain an ITIN for other purposes (open a bank account, get a driver's license, etc.) rather than to actually file taxes consistently on an annual basis. My lawyer told me it's not uncommon for the IRS to deny it to applicants, particularly to undocumented adults. I didn't make all that much back then, but i make a very decent amount of money now and the deductions on my paychecks are brutal, but i'm obviously not complaining at all. If they add a clause regarding taxes, i hope they at least give applicants the chance to pay back taxes. I will gladly pay whatever i may owe and more. That would be the least of my concerns! |
