I kind of came in late on the stream, but it seems that they are voting on a motion to suspend some rule/clause as a part of the rules committee's process?

According to Luis V Guitierrez, They're voting on the"previous question", which is an attempt to add #DreamAct to 'must pass' spending bills

Do we need NAYs or YEAs?

BeeHive 09-06-2017 03:54 PM

Re: House debating dream act!

pavpatel 09-06-2017 03:56 PM

Re: House debating dream act!

Nvm, it fixed it. Maybe it was an error. 68 YEA - 47 NAY.

why do we want Nays for an attempt to add Dream act to a must pass bill?

pavpatel 09-06-2017 03:58 PM

Re: House debating dream act!

It passed. So they won't allow the Dream Act to be added to the appropriations bill.

I googled.

Quote:

Appropriation bill. ... An appropriation bill (also known as a running bill or supply bill) is proposed law that authorizes the expenditure of government funds. It is a bill that sets money aside for specific spending. In most democracies, approval of the legislature is necessary for the government to spend money.

So they were trying to attach it to this bill.

According to Wikipedia, an appropriation bill or running bill or supply bill is a legislative motion (bill) that authorizes the government to spend money. It is a bill that sets money aside for specific spending.

Can't tell if this was a blow to us or not

BeeHive 09-06-2017 04:03 PM

Re: House debating dream act!

It means they will not be able to attach it to an appropriations bill.

They will have to attach it to some other bill.

Dems are powerless in the house . They literally can't do shit ! They need to sit down and compromise on something.

Re: House debating dream act!

This is only the first attempt guys (without any compromise)... it will take time. Remember in December they have to vote on a must pass budget bill so our best opportunity will be then...

As of now we will continue with more efforts to get DA passed!

This was a hail mary. No way in hell a Republican would be okay with attaching the Dream Act as it stands to an appropriations bill and pass it. What they're saying is that we need to discuss and debate and compromise and add some border security and whatnot to the Dream Act and THEN pass it. This was most definitely NOT a blow to us. This was just more for theatrics to just get the ball rolling.

Yeah, it's easy to be civil when there is nothing urgent on your side. It's like say for example, the British took over your country and treated you like a second class citizen in your own country and bragged about their civility while you were trying to have equal rights. I'm sure there were natives who thought "Let's give our imperial overlords a chance!"
