Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!
Dream Act as filed in the Senate bill already has an education pre-requisite.
This amendment is absolutely, 100% unneeded. Is the amendment bad? No. Is it *needed*? No. I worked in IT for nearly a decade, have been in the workforce for a looong time, make a very good income considering the circumstances, have been able to learn loads, meet wonderful mentors and co-workers, ex-boyfriends and friends. All without a STEM degree. Only one of us sisters did not attend college; she works for one of the top dentists in the area (I'm talking Seattle Magazine top year after year), makes $27.00 an hour, has worked for them for several yrs now. Success sometimes has more to do with luck and opportunity than aptitude or training. All of you should know better by now. The ones with the absolute conviction that this is the only route to legalization for DREAMERS, I think, is the result of lack of experience in the workforce and for the younger crowd, lack of overall experience in life. I am where I am because people took a chance on me, work hard and don't take things for granted. The degree had nothing to do with it. |

Are you undocumented and were brought here as a child and need to make a case that your case is more special than other immigrants and that you are going to be more likely to succeed? Given the first statement, this is a great amendment. *edit* I too know many people in various computer related fields. Sure a few people make a decent living without a degree in IT but the difference is between making a $150k a year job and a $35k a year job. Hard work along and networking with documented training can go much further than just hard work and networking. |
Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!
I'm not sure exactly what I feel about this requirement, and since I have my Master's I would personally benefit either way. Studies have shown that those with degrees do make higher salary, so I am not against higher education being pushed. But not everyone can afford a 4 year degree or needs a 4 year degree, and ultimately I don't think this requirement will gain us more votes. Then again if this passes with CIR those who don't make requirement can gain legal status through the longer path. I suppose I am not for it, but if this is the only way DREAM Act can pass then I would say go for it.

I think fiddling with the legislation again, might end up backfiring and we might age out again, if some of these cold jerks have their way. |

Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!
I think this provision is fair. For those who say they can't afford a four year education, I say you are not trying hard enough. If I and other members here in this forum can do it, so can you.
Is it difficult? Of course! Is it possible? Of course. Good luck! |
Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!
I don't agree with this amendment at all!! Depending where u live your tuition could be at international rates vs in state rates, granted there are a lot of u guys with degrees but I believe it is more of an exception than the norm.Of course it's hard work, but how do u afford a 3 credit class @ 200/cr hr or the same class at international rates 600/cr hr...even working class Americans are suffering from student loan debt..btw we don't qualify student loans anyway..all I know is every one of my classes that I pay for by cash cost me 500/3 cr class an associate degree at my community college will cost an est 10,000.00 plus books ,so it will already take me some time to get a degree,so what would be an advantage for us if we must graduate 1st..I had no choice in being brought here,my mother made that decision for me when I was 11 yrs old so I have to suffer longer because of my mothers actions..if this flies then they may as well dictate what degrees we should get ie STEM everybody isn't cut out for those career's..don't get me wrong i am taking advantage of DACA just don't see the need for graduation to be a requirement for our green card.

Re: Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!
I do not support this amendment at all, doesn't change the fact that I will most likely graduate within 5 years anyway.
There is no way in hell I am stretching an Associate or Bachelor degree journey beyond 5 years...lol...at that point I need to be concentrating on my Masters and/or starting my Career. |
