A military discharge is a permanent part of your US military record. If you quit the Reserve before you go to training, the Army Reserve issues a "discharge order"--and this is a permanent part of your military file. All MAVNIs who joined the Reserve and later quit got official discharge orders. That's the only way that the Army can get you "off the books."

mavniexpert is very true. it is not easy to get out of the reserves. once you signed that paper whether you have been to EIT or not, you are in the US army and that means it is not as simple as telling your unit or recruiter that you want out.

Is it same for active duty?

Its the same both ways. Like he said, the government will always have the records and you will likely have to explain the manner of your discharge for anything in the future.

Just the FYI for all reservists, you will receive a DD 214 at the end of your IET. It will be labeled as an honorable discharge from active duty status that you were on during IET.

Ever since I had it, I pretty much have to put it down on job applications, school applications, scholarship applications, health profession licensing application, mortgage application and some other small ones.

Yes, you are allowed to put down honorable discharge as a reservist. Active duty will not get theirs until the end of their active contract(4-6 years depending), so that's another plus advantage for being in the reserve compare to active duty. You reap all the veteran benefits years before active duty.

I was briefly active when I started the process, then I asked my recruiter to switch me to the reserve instead. I'm not dissing active. Frankly, Im jealous of them sometimes. After all the research, I deem my family, education, civilian career, and personal freedom are more important to me than a few scoops of hooah.

Do you really want all your eggs in the government basket to take care of you after putting so many ad years in? Broken body, fucked up mental health, shitty VA care and possible bureaucratic bullshit that could jeopardize your pension or career? Just look at this immigration bullshit right now.

I know you all have probably heard stories like this, but there is one dude at the PA school in my building served 16 years as a 11b/pathfinder/airborne with 3 combat tours got discharged before he could sign another contract to get his 20 year pension because the gov fucked him over some petty bs. Yeah, about that.

I like having my options open, and I like my civilian job.

Fucked up body and mental health? You make it sound like everyone in military experiences those. If you take care of yourselves you will be fine.

I can tell that you'd be a great enlisted soldier.

Good luck with your military career, some people love to be followers, it's not for everybody.

I hope we all make it.

I got a question for yall. Suppose DACA gets rescinded in March 5th, do you think Army will refuse to push our contracts through (for those who have not shipped to BCT of course) and let ICE/USCIS handle us? Really worried. MAYBE Army is waiting for congress to make decision on DACA before giving us OK to ship to basic. Am I being nonsense here?
