Since we're on the subject, have you guys started implementing the new ACRT or is it still APFT that we'll be judged on in basic?

Thanks a bunch!

After endless drama with my PRK op and MEPS I was given the green light to schedule a new physical and get a ship date, hooah.

For those that shipped and are AR: when you went back to MEPS to get your new ship date and re-sign, did the contract start anew? Because most of us signed our contracts in 2016, meaning we've been technically serving that contract for 2 years, I'm wondering if the clock will reset? I don't mind the length of service but I'm looking at VA loans so I can buy a place of my own, and I'm crossing my fingers here hoping that I'm only looking at 3.5 years before I can buy my own place, because the requirement is that you are honorably discharged from AR, or serve active duty for 181 days. My MOS is very unlikely to be activated, so I'm looking at being discharged after 6 years AR before I can get a VA loan.

Cheers.

PS: can AR pick a new MOS at re-sign?

From what i know and have heard, ARs do not get to choose new MOS, unfortunately. Kind of makes sense though right? They are already assigned to a unit

For especially the older folks, knowing your body limits and when to dial back is the key. We had way too many injuries in our company due to stress fractures and whatnot.

The Army is going to tell you to go 100% everytime because we're just numbers to them, but yeah, apply risk management.

I agree with this 100%. 30-60s helped my run like you won't believe. When I got to basic, my diagnostic run was 21:58 2-mile (at which point, I lost all hope for ever graduating BCT, much less being naturalized.. lol). I'm older, so my requirement is 17:00 flat. After doing 30-60s for 3 weeks, my red phase run came out to 18:30. The company upgraded to 60-120s in white phase and beyond, and I graduated basic with a 16:30, and passed my first AIT PT test with a solid 16:00.

My AIT company runs 4-5 miles 3 times a week, so my run has been continuously getting better. It's been hard for me to shave-off minutes at this point, but endurance-wise, it's been easier to just keep running and not get the overwhelming feeling of quitting lol..

I know these numbers are by no means "impressive," but I wanted to provide a realistic perspective to those who are older and not so physically fit/active coming into basic--I'm a 29 y/o male.

I also agree with aiming for at least a solid 50 on your push-ups and sit-ups, and build on it. My minimums are 39 and 45 respectively. The funny thing is, while I passed my initial AIT PT test (just having graduated basic), I was just a hair short on sit-ups for my end-of-course. I guess all those weekend fast food runs took a toll. HAHA! I've been working hard and practicing though, so I'm armed and ready for my retake on Wednesday morning.. please pray for me!

We've been issued our plane tickets, and if all goes well, I'm out of here in 2 weeks, and off to my local USCIS field office in SoCal to hopefully finally claim my prize.

Question for yall: my DACA status will expire before I naturalize. Will this be an issue when I apply for naturalization or anything USCIS related?

88H as an MOS is fine. Tests are easy, most activities are outdoors. It's a low ASVAB score MOS, so similar to Sorrybrah's 92A experience, there are many characters you have to learn to navigate through, but a lot of them are fine too. I was in the same boat with not many choices as a Reserve MAVNI. The duration is short enough (8 weeks as long as you don't end up being a holdunder/over). E Co here at Ft Eustis isn't the typical AIT location, and it's not the most pleasant either. You don't get to keep your phone, instead you get it only on weekends at the end of your 4th week of training. You will be stationed with other 88 series trainees (88K/L), and will have a pretty hectic PT schedule (M 3-5 mi AGR, T muscle failure, W interval run, TH platoon-led PT, F 3-5 mi company runs). Just stay out of trouble by following their rules. Avoid all counselings and articles by not being a "sh*tbag," pass your PT tests, and don't fall out of the runs to keep your privileges and avoid remedial PT.

I don't think it'll be an issue with USCIS, since there have been many naturalized expired F1s. There's been talk here at E Co though, that people without status might become holdees. I haven't been naturalized, but I renewed my DACA until 2020. I'll find out if me or other expired status MAVNIs aren't released at the end of the coming week, which is when we're scheduled to graduate and go home.

^Congrats on passing the retest! Yeah they do amp up the PT at most AIT's but the idea is that the BCT should have prepped most people into shape by now lol. I hated our infantry oriented physical stuff at my company, but honestly you can tell right away between my platoon mates and others who either had it easy / shitbags that fall out within the first 30 seconds.
