Senate Democrats Will Keep Working on Immigration Overhaul

A trio of Democratic senators will keep drafting an immigration overhaul bill, despite the defection of a key Republican.

Robert Menendez , D-N.J., confirmed Wednesday that he is working with Charles E. Schumer , D-N.Y., and Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., to create a framework that would both enhance border security and establish a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants already in the United States.

Menendez declined to speculate on the timing for a bill, though congressional aides said a draft could begin to circulate as soon as this week, in advance of a series of nationwide pro-immigration rallies planned for Saturday, May 1.

Schumer declined to comment.

Lindsey Graham , R-S.C., the lone Republican negotiating with Democrats on immigration legislation, pulled out of the talks last week. He said Tuesday he believes any effort to pass a comprehensive bill on the issue this year is doomed.

Democrats are still talking to Graham, however, and they are approaching other Republicans to find support. Any bill would need at least one Republican vote to pass, and likely many more, because it is far from clear that all moderate Democrats would vote for such a measure this year.

It will be tough to persuade even moderate Republicans to sign on before the November elections. “It’s cynical in my book,” said Orrin G. Hatch , R-Utah, “There’s no consensus. There could be a consensus if they worked with the right people, but they’re not.”

Graham said Wednesday that he would come back to the table on both the immigration bill and on a climate change measure he was also helping to write only if Democrats first bring up a border security measure that Sen. John McCain , R-Ariz., has proposed.

He wants to turn to a more comprehensive immigration bill next year. [So no longer 2012?] McCain, once a supporter of a broad immigration overhaul, has focused on security while he is locked in a tough GOP primary race against former Rep. J. D. Hayworth, a conservative opponent.

McCain's opponent supports CIR also. Just saw Crist running as Independant rather then a Rep also.

Last time I checked Hayworth was against "amnesty," by which I take it he means any policy that will allow people here illegally to become legal. You may be right that he supports CIR, but by that he probably means something more like border enforcement, mandatory E-verify, mass deportation, and no amnesty. You realize he is running against what he calls the "Obama-McCain Amnesty Plan," right?

Either way, once we stress the secure border, the rest will fall in its place!

His true motives have been finally exposed:roll:, i don't think democrats should take any advice from Lindsey Graham on this issue. He has proved to be worthless so far!

Graham is the main reason why we have got this far. He is leading the way for CIR with the Reps.

You actually believe a Senator J.D. Hayworth will vote for an Immigration reform bill with legalization included once the border is secured ?

Lol. The philosopher is reminded of certain optimists in the French Revolution who were praising the glories of the Revolution, even as they were waiting in prison to be beheaded during the Reign of Terror.

I am sorry, but there is no way J.D. Hayworth votes for a CIR bill drafted by any Democrat. That is just a simple fact.

This fool is like Bruinman excep instead of being hardcore pessimistic, he's hardcore optimistic to the point where he's gotta be retarded or at least related to Juang.

The bill they are drafting is similar to the trigger in the health care reform. The one that Senator Snowe was offering. Basically certain goals must be met in terms of border security and enforcement ( Like sending more Border patrols to border states), before the legalization path starts.

I think it is brilliant. Basically it is giving Republican what they want first and makes sure path to legalization is finally passed.

I honestly think if such a bill is drafted, republicans will vote for it.

Asked about the Democrats' proposal, McCain said, "We have to get the border secure first." He repeated the statement after being told the proposal requires border security benchmarks to be met before illegal immigrants can become legal permanent residents.
McCain has officially gone mad

He's a little hard of hearing and he probably hadn't had his nap yet. Cut him a little slack; then cut him up a slice of bread so that he can eat it dipped in raw egg yolk. (old people)

But seriously, I do think that either DA User is really just innocent and naive or that he is a troll. I'm thinking probably he is the latter, but either way someone needs to put him out of his misery.
