This gave me chills when reading and actually made me register here today (been reading constantly for the past months now). Really surprising and scary how much this relates to my situation, very sad as well :(

Yeah, it's very sad but our immigration situation usually takes the biggest psychological toll on people in the 17-20 year old range. At that age perceptions matter the most and people get too involved in them.

I remember myself at that age years ago, and what really made me angry, which is also really ironic, isn't the fact that I had it bad, because I didn't ( frankly unless you have to worry about a place to sleep and/or how to put food on the table you don't really have it bad) but the fact that everyone around me was doing so damn well with their driver licenses, new cars, school loans, spring break trips and whatever else they could do that I didn't. Things like that take their toll on kids' psyche and it's just really sad.

Just think about it guys... how many of us have had dreams about being able to drive a car? I would say most of us....and then think about how ridiculous that actually is.

Too bad he can't get his Darwin award now. If I were him I would have just left the country. The cool thing about life is knowing that just as things get shitty they can also get really fun and the best thing is that we are responsible for those choices. This kid was a wuss for not wanting to face life and work 3 times as hard to accomplish his goals. Before any of you think of becoming an hero because of being illegal I suggest you go back to your countries and experience that freedom you are looking for.

I'd really appreciate it if u didn't call him a wuss. Even though he took his life, we shouldn't pass judgement on him. The pain he must have gone through may be just as equal as ours but that doesn't mean he can take it like we do.

I am glad you understand your own strength, but I think what you're saying could have been said a bit better concerning the "wuss" comment.

Sadly, this individual is also not the first I've heard of concerning this scenario & more than likely not the last if the current situation keeps up.

I've struggled with depression and unwanted thoughts of suicide because of isolation and a shitty life in general but meh, find a way to get your shit together, being illegal is definitely not an excuse for killing yourself. If what that man did was not cowardice then ask his parents.

inb4 he waited for too long

How sad.. I'm sure some of us have considered suicide...I know I have..but damn, that just reminds us how emotionally draining our situation is!! AHH! Like someone else posted on here come up with two plans.. One for staying in the country and another for moving elsewhere...

It is clear that his suicide was based on his status based on the article. Senator Brown should take immediate action in passing Dream Act.

Dude no one is arguing that what he did was not the act of a coward or that it doesn't outrage his family, and I am sure he didn't do it to become a hero as you presume. All we are trying to say is show some respect for a fellow DREAMer who is not with us anymore. The whole wuss, rakes being shoved up people's behinds, and dickwad comments are uncalled for. If you have something other than how sad, mad, and want to work even harder this makes you, then I suggest you keep your opinion to yourself. Come on guys we need to be working together, not fighting, because we all have the same goal. Also if some of you guys are going to post things like 'RIP Gustavo', please use his whole name as a sign of respect and because my name is Gustavo as well and it creeps the hell out of me.

Me too. :-(

I think many of us here have had moments where we just don't see a way out. I know I've been there before, but luckily I made it through. This kid wasn't as fortunate.

I can't believe how insensitive and rude some of you guys' comments are. All of us, out of all people, should have compassion for him and his family instead of passing judgement.

RIP Gustavo Rezende.

I can't believe I didn't notice this earlier. As it was mentioned already, it really just coincides with what most of us go through. I also believe it's pretty disrespecful to call him a "wuss," I mean, did you know Gustavo??? who knows, he may have gone through way more than what was reported on the news. I personally understand Gustavo because I have more problems than just this hell.

While 4chan memes are certainly cute, you lack understanding of how the human psyche works. Someone in a suicidal state is not thinking logically, his/her actions can hardly be classified as cowardly since for those moments leading to their tragedy their chemistry is so fubared that you can classify them insane. That's the reason they get instutionalized. While we may not understand them, just like we don't understand kids offing themselves over parents grounding them or being bullied in school, it's impossible to gauge w/our own rationale.

I used to be of the same belief as yours, brought up in a macho Mexican household, were such drastic measues over something so relatively inconsequential are viewed as objectionable parental upbringing, but I found out that my uncles/aunts/cousins were just as weak treating their depression w/alcohol, tobacco, domestic violence, pills, impulsive shopping, etc...

long story short, we are all unique and situations affect or physiology differently, whether its as palpable as someone catching a cold or as unpercievable as someone suffering from depression.

Re: Sad, Sad Story About a Fellow DREAMer, Who Just Could not Take the Struggle.

Well i went through the same within my family (sister actually, thank god for safety barriers) and just want to say do not make the error of judging people by something like this or anything for that matter, especially us who are going through this as well, one would think would be more understanding but apparently no. OUR situation is stressful and can lead to such events. My advice is get out, hve fun, get a hobby, hang out with friends, solitude is a beautiful thing but to some it can be a very detrimental thing especially in this situation. just remember YOU are NOT alone, talk to us, I myself can't go to school, since me and Kobach share/shared schools but oh well I will be back, just looking at it from a vacation perspective that's all. PM to talk or chat, just remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE

My sister suffers from depression (8+ years & tried to overdose a few years ago). Thankfully, it has improved a little with a renewed focus on God and school. Her case isn't even related to our circumstances so I wouldn't judge him solely on that nor would I call him a coward based on what I've seen from my sis's depression (it's tough even with family support when all the hospital is giving you are pills and you can't afford a shrink).

Personally, I do have moments of weakness where you think of the situation... sometimes I do feel worthless (and I'm not in his age group). It's really easy to say "pick yourself up and leave" but it's hard to follow through when all you know is here (I've been telling myself that for the past few months but my parents are no longer young, what am I going to do if something happens and I can't come here for 10+ years?).

I don't think anyone sees him as a hero, you just see pieces of yourself in that story because you've had those thoughts but you also have to find something to focus on.
