DREAM vote next week!
Senator Reid has confirmed DREAM Act will be part of next week's defense vote!!! Call your senator: 1-888-254-5087 and Demand the DREAM Act NOW!!!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0...ml?ref=twitter The DREAM Act will get a vote on the Senate floor next week, a last shot before the November elections to appease Latino voters who are furious that President Obama has not followed through on his pledge to make comprehensive immigration reform a priority. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said at a press briefing Tuesday afternoon that the immigration reform proposal would come up as an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill. A Reid aide said that such a vote was likely to come on Tuesday of next week. The defense bill also includes a gradual repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. There will be a floor vote on an amendment to strip the repeal out of the bill, though Democrats expect to have enough votes to defeat it. The DREAM Act is far from comprehensive, but has strong backing in the Latino and immigrant rights community. It creates a conditional pathway to citizenship for undocumented children, and requires either military service or a college degree. Advocates see the DREAM Act as a major step toward comprehensive reform that would create a pathway to citizenship for most undocumented immigrants. When the DREAM Act last came up for a vote, in 2007, it won at least ten GOP votes: Bob Bennett (R-Utah), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), Norm Coleman (R-Minn), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Larry Craig (R-Idaho), Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine). Five of them -- Bennett, Brownback, Collins, Hatch and Snowe - are still serving in the Senate. The bill has 40 cosponsors and the backing of labor unions and major corporations and universities. “I think it is really important that we move forward on this legislation,” Reid said. “I know we can’t do comprehensive immigration reform. I’ve tried to, I’ve tried so very, very hard. I’ve tried different iterations of this, but those Republicans we had in the last Congress left us.” The DREAM Act provides a path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants if they were in the country before age 16 and have been present for five years before enactment of the law. Reid could not say whether he has 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, but added, “I sure hope so.” Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories...#ixzz0zXRv5gW3 video: http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/20...eid-dream-act/ Reid had previously expressed doubt that he could find the votes to pass the act, but at a stakeout today seemed confident it could pass as part of the defense authorization bill. “When that passes, millions of children will be able to get the education they need to contribute to our economy,” he said. “Boys and girls who come here before they turn 16 and have been here for five years — kids who grew up as Americans — should be able get their green card after go to college or serve in the military.” http://washingtonindependent.com/973...orization-bill |
Re: DREAM vote next week!
I hope this works. But i am disappointed that the only reason why they are doing it is because of the upcoming election

Re: DREAM vote next week!
Anyone know how many votes are needed to pass an amendment as a part of a bigger legislation?
|
Re: DREAM vote next week!
If they don't vote on it, it is going to get erased come next Congress anyway, right? So might as well do it. (Although many up for reelection will be thinking about their seats instead.) So if it passes, then when does the house vote?

Re: DREAM vote next week!
lol, funny is that my mom is stupid and made us leave so I would need this to delay one more year so it will benefit me haha. But that's selfish. I hope you guys get it. Either way, I was gonna leave the country if it had not passed.

i used to want to get into politics before i had found out about my status, but this experience has left me disgusted with government. i don't even mean getting legalization as much as having a definitive YES or NO about a position and not teetering/tottering with some rhetorical BS that they've been spewing. |

Thanks, Free2be!

Re: DREAM vote next week!
So if we do get the 60 votes.
What happens next? Does it mean that the Dream Act passes and it won't go into another round of voting? Sorry, I'm not sure what this means. |

Re: DREAM vote next week!
Yeah I hope they get enough votes to add it to the bill
|
Re: DREAM vote next week!
If the amendment passes next week, the defense bill still needs to pass the Senate. If I'm correct, the House already passed it's version of the defense authorization bill (without Dream Act attached). So, when the Senate version of the defense bill is passed, it goes to conference committee where they make the two versions of the bill similar. Then the Senate and House must pass the final version of the defense authorization bill.

Re: DREAM vote next week!
Via twitter (something we already know)
jorgeramosnews Without the Republicans the Dream Act has no chance to pass in the Senate. It's their chance to look pro Hispanic. |
Re: DREAM vote next week!
Where did you guys hear that it was next Tuesday?
Can you provide a link? |
Re: DREAM vote next week!
wow, im very exited and I will pray that it passes. but I cant help but wonder if it really is just a political stunt in order to get the Hispanic vote....
|
Re: DREAM vote next week!
If it's a stunt, then he needs to be more convincing about it. I wonder if he has the votes?
|
Re: DREAM vote next week!

Re: DREAM vote next week!
For all those [mod edit] going “oh, what a disappointment. It’s all about politics” give me a fucking break! [mod edit].
If Reid had waited until after the elections these would’ve been the same [mod edit] going “yeah Reid took his sweet time because he doesn’t care about us, it’s all about politics”; and if he had waited until after the new Congress convened, they would’ve said “geez, thanks for waiting until there weren’t enough Democrats to kill the DA on the Senate floor, it’s all about politics” so why don’t you just shut [mod edit]. When the hell do you want the DA to be brought to the Senate floor? The fact is that there will never be a perfect time for the Dream Act, NEVER!! So instead of fucking up the only chance we’ll have in about 10 years get on that phone and make phone calls. Quote:

Re: DREAM vote next week!
Our prayers are being heard, pray to god, email your senators, and then pray again. We show our will and god will do the rest. What obama and congress can't, GOD CAN. The dream act will pass this year, god is finally answering our prayers.

Re: DREAM vote next week!
How many of you guys strongly believe we will get the 60 votes? I sure hope we do :/
Quick question, does your status matter when calling senators? I want to make some calls but I wasn't sure on who I should call and if I'm even "allowed" to since I'm not a citizen. Who should I call? I live in Arizona, I don't know if that makes a difference, but yeah. |

10/10 otherwise Reid wouldn't have consider it. The worse thing we can do right now is doubt ourselves just go pick up a phone or fax these politicians until you get tired. |

I will as soon as I finish this history paper =). Was doing my work and thinking about how life will be after college without me being able to join the military, become a teacher, or finish med school and become a pediatrician. (3 of the career opportunities I would like a chance of pursuing. With military service of 4-5 years coming immediately after I get my degree) I log on and see this =). Time to get back to work, just told every friend who I know supports the dream act the news, I hope I can get their support in helping me email some senators this friday. |
