Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

Quote:

And Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who has co-sponsored the legislation in the past, will not vote for the DREAM Act next week, in part because he doesn't believe it's appropriate to add the measure to a defense bill.
“Senator Hatch doesn’t support cynical political stunts," spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier said in a statement. "This defense bill shouldn’t be held hostage to unrelated measures that have no chance of becoming law. He believes we need to keep working to regain the American people’s trust by securing the borders."

Neither will Vitter!
The d**che said this Via Twitter:

"@DavidVitter Sen. Reid is pushing in-state tuition for illegals through DREAM Act. I’ll fight against every effort they try to pass amnesty.#lacot #tcot"

nagawa 09-14-2010 06:37 PM

Re: Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

I wasn't really counting on Vitter.

Hatch was a co-sponsor. Oh well. On to the next!

Re: Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

We need every single dem vote we can get. It's time for Obama to back up his claim that he can get the majority of Dems to vote for immigration reform.

If Orrin Hatch is out do we have enough votes to Pass "DA"?

We can still call and put pressure on him to change his mind.

Hatch is not a co-sponsor, besides I'm not surprised by this with all the anti-immigrant statements he's been putting out this year. He would just have come up with a different excuse if it came to the floor as a stand alone bill.

Re: Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

The fact that Senator Hatch says that he won't vote for a bill he supported because it has "no chance of becoming law" tells me that the only reason why he supported it in the first place is to gain Hispanic votes, not to help out DREAMERs, and always though that he won't have to lose voters who are against the DREAM because he knew it would never be voted on or become law. he wanted his cake and to eat it too.

hgr1915 09-14-2010 06:56 PM

Re: Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

So we Have 54 Co-sponsors if Hatch quits we have 53.

Reis needed 5 more votes without hatch he needs 6 more votes.

Who can we get to say yes and replace Hatch?

Hatch has voted for the dream act before it is very sad that he won't vote yes for it this time around. But we have options

When the DREAM Act last came up for a vote, in 2007, it won at least ten GOP votes: Bob Bennett (R-Utah), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), Norm Coleman (R-Minn), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Larry Craig (R-Idaho), Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine). Five of them -- Bennett, Brownback, Collins, Hatch and Snowe - are still serving in the Senate.

Yes they are, they will be voting to add the Dream Act as an amendment to the Defense Bill.

Because, at the end of the day Democrats will be able to say "Hey we tried, its those damned republican who wouldnt let us!". This is the same thing Reid says about CIR "Hey I tried hard, but I have no republicans to support me"

I believe because its the last shot at some type of immigration reform before Congress goes on recess, and after the november elections democrats are looking to lose a lot of seats, maybe even the House, to republicans -most of them tea party members0,

Re: Hatch will not vote for the dream act next week

Lol, hey, no need to get mad, you need to relax. All I am saying is that they were able to pass the health care reform bill without the aid of republicans, yet they want bi partisan support on immigration and at least 60 votes for the DA. Now he's not specifying whether they have 60 votes or not but he's moving ahead with it anyways, and the fact that it's right before the elections is kind of shady.

To answer your question, I don't know what he should do but I definitely have opinions on what he SHOULD HAVE done, along with the president who promised this was going to be an issue he would tackle in his first year, and now it seems like its an issue that he won't even be able to address in his first term.

Its nice to have hope, but sometimes you need to see through political bullshit, but hey I'm all for optimism.

Also the only reason immigration reform has gotten such a bad rep now is because of America's shitty economy. They need a scapegoat. Apparently the fact that America has been in a 10 yr war which costs millions of dollars every month is not a factor of the recession but its the illegals who are stealing farmer jobs that Americans "so desperately need"

Anyways, kinda went off on a tangent, keep your hopes up, if it happens then yay, if not keep trying

Oh yes, that's a very viable option. Let's hop in that hot tub time machine and bring back Ted Kennedy so we can get 60 votes again. Why didn't I think of that before.

And of course, I'm sure that before dealing with a major recession, double-digit unemployment or providing health care for Americans President Obama should have tackled immigration. Gee, you should be a political strategist.

And for someone who doesn't know what Reid should do, you sure as hell like to bitch about what he does.

Dude no one is bitching here, do you need midol? Nor did I say we should go get Kennedy from the grave. Like you mentioned, Obama COULDN'T have tackled immigration reform his first year, let alone his first term considering the state of the country which he inherited after Bush. He knew this, yet he still made promises. No one is bitching about what Reid is doing, what a stupid thing to say. People are just vary of politicians using the immigration issue to their political advantage, for example Dick Durbin who was for CIR but then wants to amend the friggin constitution rather than tackle the CIR issue. Everyone is being wishy washy. That's politicians for you. I hope this passes, but it seems shady. That's all. Go get a drink of water or something.

Not surprising, Utah's slowly becoming very immigrant-unfriendly.

Err yeah, thats my overall opinion, I don't really trust anything that is being done so close to the November elections, I mean this is the same year where politicians have changed positions so many times on the issue of immigration.

Also for the whole "check and mate" bit, I really didn't think we were in some type of internet forum war, but apparently you do, and that's kind of funny. I think in your angst you seem to have forgotten that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Grow up.
