BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

He have said in a speech that he doesn't like ''Abortion parts in the Defense Bill''

SO it means we need as a stand-alone.....

Let's fight it........... to get in the floor by the end of this YEAR.

allowing abortion at military hospitals. republicans are strongly against it even more so if taxpayers were paying for it.

well get some of the Nays to turn, when the bill is presented stand alone. as for DADT it will probably be handle in the next congress after the pentagon is finished with their year long survey of gays in the military.

I hope its presented in a standalone. Something tells me we might be able to pass it alone...

He is a liar, when its a stand alone He is going to find yet another reason not to vote for it. Plus He said he doesn't want federal founding for abortions in military hospitals, but its going to be private funding in a federal building. He lies!!!!

So we need to push this for stand-alone. Durbin and Reid want to bring it up also based on their speech after voting.

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), who co-sponsored the DREAM Act, said he would not vote for cloture because he had about 15 objections to the defense package. But he indicated he would support the DREAM Act amendment should it come to a vote.

ok so since, nothing happened today... what's their plan now???

and a stand alone bill? how long will that take before it goes on the floor?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

The DA having to be voted on with DADT was probably the worst thing that could have happened to it.

I personally don't really care for DADT since I do not belong to either group influenced by it, but if the armed forces brass wants to survey the troops first then let them. I can understand if the society wants to be progressive but expecting that from the military, by introducing an amendment to a bill, is just wishful thinking.

Not to mention that it is not like they run a test on you that says that you're gay or not, and prevents you from enlisting. You can keep it to yourself for as long as you serve (and don't start telling me that it's hard and you shouldn't have to to it. Most of us here have kept our status to ourselves for 15+ years) , because frankly, one's sexual preference should have no place in the armed forces, and the only time it is even mentioned is when it comes to morale and simple soldier to soldier communication.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

It wasn't the dream act they were voting down. It was other things. And honestly, I take Bennett at his word. He's been a yes vote before and has nothing to lose this time.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

Okay, so all these senators who say they would vote for DREAM as a standalone... what about senators who voted for the defense bill but oppose DREAM?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

Stop calling today's vote a vote on DREAM Act!! Today's vote was on cloture for the defense bill.

Reid said that if passed, he would then attach DREAM as an amendment. DREAM hasn't been voted up or down yet. This is all a political game; Sen. Bennett waited until a fail on cloture earlier today to profess to the press that he supports the DA? Give me a f***ing break.

As of now, the DoD bill does not contain the legislation for DreamAct. Read the bill and you will see it's not there. I think the trick was to gain voter support (and more Hispanic backing) for November and beyond. I read the following on "The Hill" today; notice the time it was posted:

Senate Dems consider early exit
By Alexander Bolton - 09/21/10 01:01 PM ET

Senate Democrats are seriously weighing whether to leave town at the end of next week, instead of staying in session until Oct. 7 or Oct. 8, as had been anticipated

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Democrats might pass a stop-gap spending measure to keep government funded beyond Sept. 30 and then go back to their home states to campaign...

“We have a very limited amount of time,” Durbin told reporters. “In fact, we may only have another week or ten days before we adjourn, and I know we have to pass a continuing resolution and there will be other issues that come up.”

Durbin was not optimistic that lawmakers would spend much more time on the defense bill before the election if the effort to kill the GOP filibuster fails.

“If we fail today, whether or not we can get back to this bill will depend on whether some agreement can be reached with Republicans very quickly,” he said.

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/1...der-early-exit

This was reported a full 1 1/2 hours before the cloture vote, which makes me believe they knew it would fail. If DA is delayed until the lame duck session, I bet you anything, that then they will say it will have to be included in the CIR bill to make it pass.

But lets put this into context, what are the chances that the DREAM Act will com up as a stand alone bill anytime soon?

The thing about this abortion at a military base is that the abortion is funded by the private sector not the government.

With Republicans you can't never count on their vote until the measure have passed. They change their stance more often than they change clothes.

Bennett had said that he would vote against the DOD bill and would vote for DA (as a standalone) like 2 days ago. I wasn't surprised when he voted the way he did.

Call Reid/Durbin (Majority Leader/whip) to proceed with DA as Standalone!

We must put something major together and connect all social platforms together to make one giant push for DREAM as standalone.

Ugh, but some senators say they wont vote for it alone because it needs to be part of a broader immigration bill. We seriously need them to back this up pronto.

We need another chance and hopefully we can get it before Nov or lame duck.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

Okay, here it goes. Our Strategy is: We will push Senator Harry Reid to bring the Dream Act for voting as a stand-alone bill... Not attached to anything else... this may give it the best chance of passing. Here's the number: Phone: 202-224-3542 . That's what we must do. Some of you guys are talking about giving up ...and what-not.... WHY WOULD YOU GIVE UP NOW??? It's not the end. D.A. WASN'T EVEN VOTED ON!! C'mon!

whisperstearz 09-21-2010 06:09 PM

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

we coulda had 62 firm votes today for the dream act if Sen Reid didnt add it to the defense bill. About 4 republicans voted no just because what it was attached to.. and they also mentioned on the floor that they are indeed strong dream act supporters.. i believe that if they bring DA as a stand alone it will pass 100%.. ******but they better do the defense bill b4 they do the DA****** the reason is that if they do the DA b4 the defense bill there gana say "the democrats just screwed the military funds which means now the military has no way of getting any funds and harry reid is focusing on illigals??" so we need to make sure he passes the defense authorization bill b4 hand!!!!

so what's their plan now???

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

Reid and the Dems are playing politics; the President had a closed-door meeting with 'advocates' last Friday not to be available to the press or blog posters. By not securing the votes for either DA or DADT, and making the passage conditional on cloture for the DoD bill, they will try to blame the Republicans and again do nothing to ensure passage of either bill. They have no shame and a lot of gall if they come out and say to vote for them and they will 'try' to pass it again.

They don't have one because they and the pres apparently left " no stone unturned". If they had, they would have been able to secure the votes for it today. They must bring DA to the floor on its own asap.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Bannett from UTHA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT!.

Quote:

Bennett and Hatch, who backed a similar vote three years ago, said their action was not because they have changed their position on the Dream Act. Rather, they said their vote was a reaction to other parts of the bill they found objectionable

“If I could offer an amendment that says ‘Let’s strip the Dream Act out and then vote on the Dream Act as a free standing bill,’ I would do that and I would vote for the Dream Act.”
Quote:

They don’t go through committee like they should in the Senate, they don’t give the minority any chance at all to bring up even legitimate amendments and this stuff has to stop,” Hatch said just off the Senate floor. The Utah Republican added he is “a little uptight” about what Democrats have done with the Dream Act, which he previously sponsored, but that he would have looked at supporting it had the Democrats allowed the act to come up separately. Hatch had reiterated his supported for the measure as recently as July.

Reid needs to put all these republicans on the spot by allowing dream to be voted on as a stand alone.

It may be attached to another bill also.
