Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
Undocumented students at Miami-Dade College broke into tears Tuesday afternoon, after the U.S. Senate voted to keep the DREAM Act out of the defense bill.
Many of the students had hoped the measure would change their lives forever, opening doors to opportunity. So when the vote came in, devastation filled the room. "I'm heart-broken," said Esteban Roncancio, an undocumented student with tears in his eyes. "I thought finally we would get a chance to give back to this country that we all love," Nineteen-year-old Adan Quesada was also overwhelmed with emotion while watching the news. His parents brought him to the United States when he was just 19-years-old. "I can't do a lot of stuff I thought I could do as a kid," said Quesada. "I was brought here at a young age and I thought my whole life I was American until I got to my senior year and I can't work, I can't drive, I couldn't even go to college and now I'm working hard to not be oppressed and fight against it and be somebody." The DREAM Act would have given some young undocumented immigrants the chance to become permanent residents if they completed two years of college or served two years in the military. It is a move that Floridians for Immigration Enforcement have been fighting. "We call it the dream stealing amnesty act," said David Caulkett, the group's Vice President. "It redistributes dreams away from citizen students and gives those college dreams to illegal alien students and that's just grossly unfair." While Caulkett and his group are rejoicing the senate's move Tuesday, the students hoping for legalization are vowing not to give up. "I'm sad, I'm very sad," said Felipe Matos, an undocumented student. "But I have to be strong for my friends and I have to be strong so we can keep on fighting." http://cbs4.com/local/dream.act.denied.2.1924515.html |

Re: Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
This is where they can't give up. We must urge Senate majority leader Reid and Majority Whip Durbin to bring the DREAM Act as a standalone bill. More senators supported it than apposed it as a standalone. With the inclusion of the support of Senator Bennett (R-UT) who says he wants to support the DREAM Act but not in the defense bill because of other controversial measures in the bill.

Re: Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
We must keep fighting and make our voices heard.
and really guys... let's not let this set back chap our asses too bad, cause realistically, this is something that HAS to be done sooner or later. Mass deportation of students is unreal, and unfair. And well, this great country prides itself in it's American values that hold a reputation of being fair........most of the time. I know we've waited a long time, and we're downright tired of waiting... but I have high hopes that the solution is right around the corner. This isn't over. We can do this!! |

Re: Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
DREAM will most likely be brought up to be voted as a standalone bill later this year. If not they'll retry it after the elections in the Lame Duck Session. We have to keep in mind that because of this stupid partisan election it was going to be quite hard passing a piece of legislation with two controversial amendments *Dream/repealing DADT*

Re: Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
I kinda expected it to be honest, I thoughg they did it to stir up view points and votes
But who knows, maybe they will bring it up as a stand alone? They should and could, after all they're saying how they're all for it and how important the Latino vote is to them |

Re: Local Students Crushed After DREAM Act Fails
We still have the Promise the President made during the private fundraiser.
He said he would regularize the status of Immigrants with (TPS) status and Dream Act students through executive order after the November Elections. Another possibility would be the fact that the dream act is not dead and it might be brought up in another date later this year. (Dream act is back in the judiciary committee) The last hope we have is the CIR bill of SEN. Martinez. He will introduce it by the end of September or beginning of October.... It will be debated on January. SEN. Shummer also has a bill. I haven't lost hope and you guys should not give up!!!! |

p.s: the only way it'll be brought up as a stand-alone before elections is if we call and pressure Reid to do so. So keep on calling people. |
