Mitch McConnell spokesman: Stopping the DREAM Act isn’t a top priority for us

From an anti-immigration website:
http://hotair.com/archives/2010/11/2...iority-for-us/

Quote:

Republicans are ramping up their opposition to the legislation,
noting that simply by applying for the Dream Act’s program, illegal aliens could be given a hiatus from the law for as long as six years. They also note the bill will grant illegal aliens eligibility for in-state tuition and the right to sponsor their parents and extended family for legalization…
An aide to a moderate GOP senator said Democrats haven’t made any serious attempts to discuss the bill with the other side of the aisle. There is “no real organized effort that I am aware of,” the source said, “generally this is seen for what it is — a political, not policy driven endeavor.”…
Potentially offering hope to the legislation’s advocates, Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, said Republicans aren’t making it their top priority to kill the bill.
“I don’t have a whip count on it…Our priority is making sure no one gets a tax hike and funding the government while reducing spending,” Stewart said.

See this is the problem Im am having with the Democrats. Every few years, when they are in trouble, they come out with thisDream act as a way to get hispanic and immigrant voters to vote for them, knowing they dont want it to pass, because then they cant use it the next time. I mean they are not even talking to the other side about what to do. And I think that they dont consider the DREAM a priority cuz they are not voting for it, and know it wont pass

Im afraid that compromising it will mean changing the age, and making the dream different from its original purpose

I think a good comrpomise will be to lower the age to 30, but still have the provision that if you have at least a 2 year degree you can apply, leave to the states the decicion of who gets instate tuition, make us pay a fee, check our criminal background with fingerprints, instead of green cards give us renewable work permits, and don't allow us to petition immidiate family members until we become citizens.

i think this will be a very good compromise no??

They also have the retroactive provisions for that.

Yes. Also we should be banned from any in-state tuition. No gov't help either. Can't travel out of country either.

I know compromising is good, but what senator has been on the record saying that they will now vote for DREAM Act because age limit was lowered by 5 years?

Exactly. Makes no sense to make concessions on things our opponents don't even want.

How many Dreamers here understand the "RETROACTIVE PROVISION" aspect of the Dream Act?

I honestly believe the instate tuition was the bigger issue.

Lot of the DREAMers do not know about the 'Retroactive Provision' because its like a small print in this bill but it is getting out there now.

Then take out the In-tuition part. Lot of the DREAMers already have a 2/4 year degree or higher anyways. Atleast the DREAMers will be able to work legally, pay taxes like the rest of the legals do. International Students on F-1 have to pay out of state tuition fees anyway.

Also, DREAMers with misdeamenors should be excluded also. Must have perfect clean criminal record.

The Republicans want tax cuts for the rich. That is their top priority for the lame duck session. Reid can compromise on that.

Other areas where Reid can compromise on:
Additional resources for border patrol and fence building.
Add two more years to college/military requirement.
Can only sponsor parent's for now. After that individual has become a citizen can sponsor others.
Applicants pay a nice fee. For example: $1000

dude, None of Republicans want to talk about immigration issue, even Dream Act, because they don't want to. this is a excuse that McConnell rejected the Dream Act, since he is not willing to compromise any immigration issue any time and any year! that's why he said not the top priority
