Utah Sen. Bob Bennett

The Republican Caucus including all 43 senators have signed a “No Vote Pact” today. Under the “Pact” the senators refuse to vote on any legislation which does not deal with the budget or with continuing tax cuts started under the Bush Administration, according to a telephone conversation with Matt Jensen, Staffer to Utah Sen. Bob Bennett.

The “No Vote Pact” is in response to social legislation proposed by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV.), including the Dream Act and the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’. It is a clear effort by the Republican caucus to delay the introduction of laws pending the change of power in the U.S. House of Representatives after the first of the year. Republicans will take over leadership at that time making passage of both the Dream Act and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” unlikely.

Mr. Jensen said the “Pact” would remain in effect until substantial laws were introduced into the Senate to address economic problems in the U.S. I asked Mr. Jensen how long that would be and he indicated “Until the end of the lame duck session”.

The offer by President Obama to grant extension of tax cuts to those who make less than $250,000 has been rejected. Republicans are pushing for a full extension of the cuts including for those who make over a million dollars a year.

The Republican Caucus has clearly stated it’s priorities. Until the wealthiest people in the U.S. can assure they fill their pockets with an unfunded tax cut, Republican leadership is unwilling to help the poorest. Many Dream Act students have pinned their last hope on passage of the act and face deportation soon without it.

Meanwhile, those who have more than enough to live the American Dream hold the nation at bay. Additional matters which likely will be victim of the “Pact” is the proposed Start Treaty to limit nuclear proliferation.

Democrats - No tax cuts for 2% of the richest Americans, Taxes earned will go to federal programs and will be spreaded to the rest of the 98% oh hardworking Americans

Republicans - Everyone gets a tax cut!!!! Because we like to be annoying and give to the rich, even though it wont make a difference because they are too rich!

That sums up the debate, and I hope they can settle it.

Because the tax cuts are much more important to the average American, and if they hold them ransom for the DREAM Act, it will seem to the average American like the Democrats are putting undocumented immigrants before American citizens.

You don't think they know that? That's why they want to make sure that you never have the opportunity to vote. Why give a vote to someone who will use it against you, in their eyes

I actually agree with Republicans in keeping the Bush tax cuts because we shouldn't penalize people for working hard and getting to be where they are.

But this is just partisan bs from the Republicans, they know the Dems won't have enough time to get DA done if they go with the tax cuts first.

The Republicans can always extend the tax cuts next year when they have the House, but they're using this as an excuse for being a party of no.

Not all of them worked hard for their money, some inherited it from their rich daddies.

It's about income, and if they inherited the money we shouldn't even be able to tax that money.

These Tax Cuts were designed to expire. So no one is penalizing anyone. The government is just stopping the extra money that would otherwise be the government's money. (Which I think is in the 100s of billions of dollars.) So the democrats propose a fair plan to let the cuts stay for the majority of the people who really need it and just take away the bonus money that the super-rich don't need it.

I say super-rich, because I still consider people who make over a $100,000 rich, and I believe the democrats' limit is $250,000. To make it even more balanced, Senator Chuck Schumer even proposed to make the limit to 1 million. But the republicans didn't even budge.

Sometimes I wonder if the republicans should have the donkey as their mascot. Because they sure can be stubborn like them.

I beg to differ. Without the death tax as they call it, the gap between the rich and the poor would be even wider than it is today. Inheritance money is one the major contributing factors to the rich staying rich and the poor staying poor. It’s Hypocritical that the people calling for its repeal, are the same people screaming about handouts and welfare.

Tax cuts:
I’m not a big fan of tax cuts. While it’s rational for people to desire a greater return for their fruits of labor, it’s irrational to continue to fulfill those desires by subsidizing taxes through borrowed money. People need to understand that taxes are necessary for spending-you cannot cut taxes without compromising expenditures. Many may argue in favor of cuts in spending, waste and unpopular programs, but it’s difficult to reach consensus on what which big government programs merit termination.

If it wasn’t for the economy being in shambles, I’d be in favor of letting the cuts expire. The Bush Tax cuts were opposed by hundreds of economists, and resulted in net loss of revenue. They are considered by many to be the primary sources to our huge deficit.
