Obama: I will do “everything in my power” to enact the Dream Act.

Quote:

President Obama told an Hispanic audience Wednesday night he will do “everything in my power” to enact the Dream Act, which would prevent the deportation of illegal immigrants studying at American colleges or having served in the military.

And of course he's talking to a Hispanic audience.

It is clear that Dream Act will not happen in 2011 and 2012.

Of course, he wouldn't even mention one word about immigration to anyone until he lost 60 senators...because if it didn't go through then, everyone would blame democrats.

Now the republicans run half of congress. It doesn't work, blame them. Rinse and repeat.

Although I think Obama is at least making claims, giving us false hope as opposed to saying nothing at all.

True. But, we want to see or hear of political action--not more rhetoric.

Maybe, President Obama is going to exert a tremendous amount of pressure on congress to reach a compromise this year. . . . However, will he be successful? That is the question.

If nothing happens this year, I say that all of us let ourselves be arrested, so we can apply for a work permit because I have a feeling the waiting game is going to continue for a very long time. Can any of you with degrees picture yourself working the same damn crappy job four to five more years??????????????????????????? ABSOLUTELY MIND BOGGLING. MY GOD.

I'm with you on this one Smooth, I think I have something to my advantage anyway, but maybe I'm wrong, what do you guys think? - My dad is a 76 yr old american citizen, I could say that I take care of him, and that if I get deported he will go through extreme hardship? Comments anyone??

This is absolutely pathetic. The man has the election in his bag yet he is begging literally on his knees begging for votes.

In my opinion it's true that Nancy Pelosi would be a huge gain if she becomes speaker again. If you guys remember the DA passed under her belt in the House, but it FAILED in the senate. Obama owes Pelosi a great deal getting the Healthcare Reform pass. I have no doubt in my mind that Pelosi is one of the key players in getting it pass in the house. Obama didn't try hard enough in the senate.

"Under certain circumstances, fasting is the one weapon God has given us for use in times of utter helplessness." Mahatma Gandhi

Speaks the truth for most of us I believe.

Imagine not one but hundreds of us going on a hunger strike on the washington capitol? Arrested or not it would be amazing. Plus, if we do get arrested maybe we'll get the coveted ticket to a work permit. lol

Yes!!!!! It would be a huge message. I feel helpless. We are in the hands of cycnial people with suits and ties. We really need to send out a huge message.

A few of us have done individual hunger strikes here and there but a massive one would be really "moving."

What we need is some really strong grassroot movement. It is true what Obama, Durbin, and Gutierrez are all saying that we need to take matters into our own hands and start talking to every DA recipients out there. Nothing will happen with us just reading posts on here and hoping something miraculous to happen.

It would be amazing if we could organize something large in D.C. itself. Realistically, at this moment, the most we can do is organize smaller protests around the country. I take part in smaller efforts, but I would love to be part of something bigger.

For a rally (let's say) in the future, get people from various groups who advocate for the DREAM Act. Dreamers, immigrant rights groups, and of course people from political groups that normally differ on issues: American progressives who support us, the Conservative Coalition for Immigration Reform, religious groups, etc. Encourage dreamers to come out, ask our teachers/professors who support us to speak, blah blah blah.

If we are able to organize something, just be prepared to be inundated with people telling us we don't even have to right to protest, or that we're criminals, or that we should just go home. But, eh. We get that now anyway.

Re: Obama: I will do “everything in my power” to enact the Dream Act.

Yea. I think bringing it to DC is the best possible outcome we can do. Smaller protests around the country is good, but having combined dreamers around the country is best.

I want to watch people come up to me and tell me I have no right to be here and the only response I can tell them is to go do the same because the ONLY ones who truly belong to this country are native americans.

Guys,

With all due respect, but haven't we been doing this grass-roots movement for ten years???? I think I can honestly say that we have done our part. It its time for Obama to flex his political muscle on the issue.

The Democrats never had the 60 votes needed to bust a filibuster...at most we had 59...and at best we had 54 thanks to the bluedog fucktards who cared more for their re-election than the actual caucus. You saw how the majority voted for it in both houses. I just honestly wish the Democrats hadn't been bent into agreeing to the 60 votes to break a filibuster a few sessions ago then we could have passed it with a simple majority and in that case at the worst it showed how Democrats can be pretty big pussies.

This is getting insulting - he needs Pelosi to do everything he can to pass DREAM Act, when exactly? in the year 2016, eight years after he was elected president???? How many more will be deported or aged out of DREAM by then? I mean, come on. This sounds like desperation, and all of you guys should check out the budget request they have submitted to Congress for immigration enforcement.

Also, what is the deal with the DREAM Act in the actual Congress? It was re-introduced by Durbin in May with a new bill number. One measly hearing in 10 years, preaching to the choir in June. And? What is the plan from here on?

Repeat said quote until reelection, and then continue repeating it until 2nd term is over. Run out of time. They won't notice.
