Republican House Members: We’ll Support Immigration Reform but No Path to Citizenship

Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have indicated they may support immigration reform but not one that supports a path to citizenship. All eyes are on the Republican-controlled House now that the Senate passed its own version of comprehensive immigration reform legislation with a 68-32 vote.
The Senate vote included 14 Republicans yes votes and 32 Republican No’s – all Democratic Senators voted for the legislation.

One strategy could be to let the Republicans get this one and get the process started on legalizing 11 million people without a pathway to citizenship. Then try to pass deeper reforms with a more friendly congress.

LOL This is the most outrageously childish behavior I've seen in a while from Republicans. I completely agree. Lets just get this passed first. Who says we can't pass more reforms in the future? All we need is right to drive, work, and travel correct? Also, to those saying they'll settle with a green card...what do you think a green card is? A green card by definition is permanent residency that gives you a shot at citizenship after five years I believe. Whatever plan the Republicans are brewing..I can tell you there is no green card involved at all. The most they could do for us is a DACA like status for EVERYONE. Not too sure how they'll compromise this deal out. Whatever their plan is...it will exclude either driving or traveling..something absurd like that.

Republicans are more worried about the semantics of Immigration Reform instead of the actual ideas. They would think twice about voting for something that sounds like "pathway to citizenship".

They are trying to warp the language (without changing anything) by adding "provisions to legalization" and emphasizing "legalization" without mention to the intended path.

I don't think most of the Republicans are even familiar with the process or the difference between green cards and citizenship.

I think RPI is good enough for now. Deal with the rest later. Whatever it takes to pass.

Why would anyone actually care about citizenship?

Seriously.

It means nothing. Hopefully democrats realize this and capitalize on the opportunity to bring people out of the shadows.

Maybe is nothing for me and you (and my parents basically) but to many others, citizenship is a identity, a sense of home and where they belong. And to be fare, that is what we all wants.

Plus, having US passport does let you go a lot of places without hassle.

I'd take a green card over citizenship right now without a second thought. 5 extra years for citizenship is nothing.

Ouuch! So sad, yet, could turn out to be true. Republicans are about to lose a large portion of voters and many, many more in generations to come. They are shooting themselves on both feet. Big TIME!

This is how I feel. At this point I just want to travel, work and live my life without having to look over my shoulder constantly. I'd rather not have to make another phone call for someone who has done nothing to be deported or be glued to my Google feed for a story that has even a drop of positive news.

This time five years ago, my mother wanted citizenship, but she looked at me today and told me that if she could just drive, legally work and travel, she would be happy.

It's all just very frustrating because we know we deserve more than what the GOP is begrudgingly going to give us (if they ever do that).

all i want is a permission to join military!

Re: Republican House Members: We’ll Support Immigration Reform but No Path to Citizen

The obvious reason that Democrats want Citizenship while the GOP does not is VOTES... Never forget that. Democrats know more Latino citizens means more liberal voters... Mexicans are super conservative (Personally) but look at the country socially, it is liberal as hell. Democrats are also screwing us. But, atleast they will screw us in a way that affects are life for the better. GOP basic strategy is do not create new voters. And that screws us in a bad way.

You can try to believe democrats have a pure heart and they want to help us, and some representatives do, but if we honestly asked them to drop citizenship for our sake. They would not do it! Sorry, but if they are going to struggle they are atleast going to get some votes.

Don't get me wrong, I do want to be a citizen, but the analogy I like is when you see someone dying of hunger, you feed them. Maybe the only food you have is some fatty fast food and soft drinks. You can't spend 2 days debating whether the fast food is not that great for them or they'll get heart disease or suffer from obesity. Give the starving person food, then once he's back on his feet, you can discuss what proper nutrition is.

I get you. Ideally, I want to be a citizen, as well. Being able to vote has always been something that I wanted to do. But if that's not on the table, I can't hold out for what I want when I know that there are others here who could do well with Permanent Residency or simply even a Work Permit.

I think Republicans are going to be losing power in the next 2 or 3 elections if they keep up their attacks on womens rights, gay rights, and immigrants. We would have never come this far even if the atmosphere was the way it was 10 years ago.

That's what keeps me hopeful. The air is different in Washington and the country is not the same as it was in 2007.

The Republicans may fight it every step of the way, but I can see how CIR would be able to pass this year.

^ This

I am still optimistic it will be done before the clock chimes in January 1, 2014...and for all of our sake...lets hope that is the case...because after that point, don't see much anything happening until 2015+

Same. Did you know if a current GC holder serves in the military the individual is allowed to become a citizen in just 3 years. Makes sense since only a citizen is allowed to be deployed overseas.
