Trump says he'll make the final call on DACA, not subordinates

http://www.latimes.com/politics/wash...htmlstory.html

President Trump said Thursday that he, and not subordinate officials, would make the decision about what to do with President Obama's program that shields more than 750,000 people from deportation who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

"It’s a decision that I make, and it’s a decision that’s very very hard to make. I really understand the situation now," Trump said.

"I understand the situation very well. What I’d like to do is a comprehensive immigration plan. But our country and political forces are not ready yet," he added.

Trump's Homeland Security secretary, John F. Kelly, had suggested in remarks Wednesday that Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions might make the final decision about the program, known as DACA, if it is challenged in court.

Trump's remarks appeared to suggest that he would not delegate the decision about the future of the young people known as "Dreamers" to Sessions.

California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra said this week he is prepared to do everything in his power to defend the program – including standing with the Trump administration against a legal threat from Republican states.

Last month, Kelly released a memorandum that formally ended the legal fight over a related program, the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, or DAPA. That initiative sought to temporarily remove the threat of deportation for the parents of children who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents but was never fully implemented.

I'm starting to like Trump on DACA more and more. He is no Obama, but he is the biggest reason DACA is still standing. It's not him, but the 10 states' AG that wants to end DACA.

Must be some fucked up timeline we live in when Trump is the guy standing between them and DACA. But hey, the president's (seemingly) on our side, I ain't gonna complain.

"I really understand the situation now"

What did he mean by this? Is he saying that he now sees that we're really not at fault for being undocumented and he's keeping DACA or is he saying illegal means illegal and we have to go?

That's what I'm wondering too. It's drives me crazy that his statements are so ambiguous.

At this point, he is not totally wrong. Trump could have rescinded DACA anytime he wants, it is still in effect 7 months after he becomes the president. Currently, the biggest threat to DACA is the lawsuit by the AGs, not Trump.

Anyone care to explain why the AGs didnt attempt to file the lawsuit during the obama administration since someone said(cany remember who) that the AGs would win in court?

Trump cannot defend us from this. Even sessions won't be able to defend us. The real issue here is that racist judge. What is trump suppose to do?

"hey judge you make to rule in favor of DACa understood ?"

Plenty of things Trump can do:

Some examples;
1) Force his AG to defend DACA
2) Come out in support of DACA
3) Come out in support of BRIDGE Act or RACA
4) Push the Republicans behind the scenes to pass BRIDGE Act or RACA
5) Start negotiations for wall funding for BRIDGE Act or RACA

Replace DACA with CIR?

With everything else going on, I'm afraid that Trump won't have the time and energy to do anything with DACA. When the 10 states sue, DACA may die in court. SAD!

I'm afraid of that too. Though the narrative in this forum seems to be that Trump's hands are tied, while they aren't if he truly wanted to help us.

I don't believe such a key piece of immigration program such as DACA will quietly end under the radar. The closer we get the September 5, I have no doubt the more attention and action we will see. You remember at the start of the year how DACA was asked about at almost every White House press briefing. Well this will be asked about from Congress and the White House until we get some clear answers.
