Aguilar passes critical amendment to allow Dreamers access to federal employment

This is great! It's a move that brings DACA forward, so great job, Rep. Aguilar!

But I'm so confused. This passed, but not an amendment to keep DACA safe?

July 14, 2017 Press Release
Aguilar Passes Critical Amendment to Allow Dreamers Access to Federal Employment

Last night in the Appropriations Committee, Rep. Pete Aguilar passed a critical amendment that was added to the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee appropriations bill, which would allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, also called Dreamers, to be eligible for federal employment.

“These young men and women identify as Americans, living in the only country they have ever called home. Denying Dreamers the opportunity to serve their community and country through public service stands in stark contrast to our nation’s core values,” said Rep. Aguilar. He continued, “Expanding the pool of applicants for our federal workforce will ensure we can get the best and brightest applicants, whoever they may be. This amendment makes a commonsense change to give Dreamers the opportunities they deserve and our nation the workforce it needs.”

“DACA recipients are going to school, preparing for careers, and contributing to their communities,” said Appropriations Ranking Member Nita Lowey. “Yet because of something they had no control over – their parents’ entry into the United States – they are deemed ineligible to serve their country through federal employment. I am extremely proud Rep. Aguilar’s amendment correcting this grievous wrong passed in the Appropriations Committee, and we will work together to defend the amendment as the process moves forward.”

Currently, DACA recipients must use third-party organizations or fellowship programs to access federal internships or employment. Rep. Aguilar has been a fierce advocate for the immigrant community and is a stalwart supporter of comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship. Rep. Aguilar’s amendment passed unanimously by voice vote and was added to the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee appropriations bill, which will be considered by the full House of Representatives. Rep. Aguilar’s amendment can be read in full here.

NumbersUSA people are livid on Twitter. This could possibly make it more likely that a deal is being prepared behind closed doors, to secure DACA?

My eyes watered reading this. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that U.S. is our country! Yes, our parents were wrong in bringing us here illegally but this is not a choice we made. If any of my friends and coworkers found out that I was "illegal" , they wouldn't believe it.

@HouseAppropsGOP

The Committee has approved the FY18 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill on a vote of 31-21.

Not bad for a GOP dominated committee. We need more support!

Re: Aguilar passes critical amendment to allow Dreamers access to federal employment

i believe he just wanted to bring attention to the issue, to debate and find a more permanent solution separately.

I think the appropriations committee is where we are likely to have something attached to help us. The chairman seems very pro daca!!

Would this then make us eligible to pass federal clearances?

Good question. I could have had a job with Raytheon but I couldn't get clearance... it paid well!

Re: Aguilar passes critical amendment to allow Dreamers access to federal employment

The full amendment below:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law or regulation, an alien who is authorized to be employed in the United States pursuant to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program established under the memorandum of the Secretary of Homeland Security dated June 15, 2012, shall be eligible for employment by the Government (including any entity the majority of the stock of which is owned by the Government)

It's a small step but I'll take any good news I can get!

Re: Aguilar passes critical amendment to allow Dreamers access to federal employment

What's this mean exactly? Not too familiar with how bills and government work outside of the basics, but how was this voted on? It didn't need to go through the House or Senate? Or is this something else?

Re: Aguilar passes critical amendment to allow Dreamers access to federal employment

This is really important because if trump decides to take the lawfully present from DACA to save it, then we would still be able to get work permits. I think?

for state levels it varies...

but federal positions like house of rep or senator, you have to be a citizen for like 7 years and resided in the state or district you lives in for awhile

Everyone should call, e-mail and/or tweet Rep. Aguilar to thank him for his efforts and ask him to continue to advocate for a more permanent solution for DREAMers.

I'm pretty damn sure Boeing doesn't hire only Green Card holders. That ain't a federal agency. There's probably plenty of different jobs within that Company.

There are thosands of employees with h1bs working at these companies...

They are the work horses, uscs are mostly lazy and demand too much.

This is a misconception of the industry.

I had to say no to Raytheon because as an auditor I would need clearence and that wasn't possible.

That is different, depends on the position, but there are a lot of good jobs or I should say engineering positions filled by h1bs.

A month ago, he told lawmakers that to make temporary status permanent for young people brought here illegally, they should turn President Obama’s executive order into legislation.

“I’m not going to let you off the hook,” Kelly told Congress. “You’ve got to solve this problem.”

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017...sec-kelly.html

It would be awesome if Kelly really put pressure on congress to pass legislation .

Kelly did not even know there were bills already made to fix the situation...
