Trump is deporting fewer immigrants than Obama, including criminals

President Trump has vowed to swiftly deport “bad hombres” from the United States, but the latest deportation statistics show that slightly fewer criminals were expelled in June than when he took office.

In January, federal immigration officials deported 9,913 criminals. After a slight uptick under Trump, expulsions sank to 9,600 criminals in June.

Mostly deportations have remained lower than in past years under the Obama administration. From January to June, Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported 61,370 criminals, down from 70,603 during the same period last year.

During the election, Trump vowed to target criminals for deportation and warned that they were “going out fast.” Later, he suggested he would try to find a solution for the “terrific people” who never committed any crimes, and would first deport 2 million to 3 million criminals.

But analysts say he is unlikely to hit those targets. Since January, immigration officials have deported more than 105,000 immigrants, 42 percent of whom had never committed any crime.

Last year, a total of 121,170 people were deported during the same period, and a similar percentage had no criminal records.

John Sandweg, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said part of the reason for the decline is that illegal border crossings have plunged since Trump took office pledging to build a “big, beautiful” wall and crack down on illegal immigration. Immigrants caught at the border accounted for a significant share of deportations under the Obama administration.

Another factor, however, is that immigration officials are arresting more people who never committed any crime — some 4,100 immigrants in June, more than double the number in January — clogging the already backlogged immigration courts and making it harder to focus on criminals.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement released the deportation figures, which the Post had requested, late Thursday, two days after the Justice Department announced that immigration courts ordered 57,069 people to leave the United States from February to July, a nearly 31 percent increase over the previous year.

However, Justice officials have not said how many of the immigrants ordered deported were actually in custody — or if their whereabouts are even known. Every year scores of immigrants are ordered deported in absentia, meaning they did not attend their hearings and could not immediately be deported.

The deportation figures come as the Trump administration is fighting with dozens of state and local officials nationwide over their refusal to help deport immigrants, and as the administration is attempting to reduce legal and illegal immigration.

I'm telling you dawg. Nothing has changed. It's just the rhetoric and media making you believe that "Trump is coming after immigrants and immigrant youth." I've seen no difference in my state. I've even traveled west coast and to the south as well after Trump was elected, no problems at all. The only thing he's done is hire more immigration Officers. Trump is the best thing that has happened for the prospect of CIR. I believe that fully.

Agreed, just that Trump is going after people with deportation orders or who skipped court.

Easy to say this when it isn't your family member that's been allowed to live here for years and then suddenly deported now that there's a new administration and the rules have changed.

Shouldn't had a deportation order, honestly.

If you get deported I'm going to say you shouldn't have been undocumented, honestly.

Please don't make it seem like we are not caring or insensitive people alright. We are all experienced undocumented people who have gone through tons of hardship so nothing is easy for us to say. I don't want people here to think we are celebrating the Trump administration in any way but the fact of the matter is they are NOT going after people who have no records whatsoever. I'm sure those with ANY sort of dealing with the court is facing extra scrutiny. Nobody is denying that. But I do not feel bad for someone with even the most minor misdemeanors commited after Trump got elected. That's just something we had coming by electing Trump and should have been more careful. The fact is that Trump is President, if you're going to carry two flags at rallies they both better be American flags..if there is any other color besides red white and blue then you're the bad hombre that is messing it up for the rest of us innocent undocumented people who are trying to become legal.

I will also add that Trump is showing more heart toward dreamers than a lot of Bernie supporters (THE PROGRESSIVES AND SO CALLED CHAMPS OF MINORITIES). I remember approacching them and encouraging them to vote for Hillary because a lot was at stake and our community was in danger. Time and fucking time again I was rejected. They simply said "sorry." We were left out in the cold. A lot of them told me to suck it up. Easy for them to say because they are legal and their bitch asses won't get deported!

If Trump legalizes us and Bernie faces Trump, I am going to be 100% behind Trump. Nothing against Bernie, but I want Trump to win again and see progressives squeel like the fucking hypocrit pigs that they are. 2face and I are pro Trump. That's right.

Indeed at the moment, it's everyone for themselves. As far as we are concerned here on DAP, we want DACA to remain alive and with that regards Trump has certainly met our expectations. Now we will see how much courage he has to actually fend off the loser Attorney General's next month. I really think DACA will continue to exist but lets see. As long as our information isn't used to come after us and our families who have done no bad, I have no problem with Trump. And I'd like to clarify the fact that we are Pro-Trump so far only with his DACA related and overall policies of not going after people with no records whatsoever. We don't want to be called out for being "racist Trump loving people."
