Paul Ryan May Delay Long-Term Spending Bill

Looks like this rollercoaster might extend for a couple more weeks after deadline and some Democrats will probably be on board with it.

Quote:

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Tuesday said Republicans may need a short-term spending bill to prevent a government shutdown on Dec 9.

Ryan said the House GOP's goal was to pass a long-term spending bill by the end of the year, but suggested lawmakers may not be able to do so by a Dec. 8 deadline.

"We're not talking about going into next year, we're talking about getting it done this year," Ryan said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"We might need a little more time to let the appropriators write their bill," he added.

The government will shut down on Dec. 9 without a new spending measure.

Other Republicans have suggested a stopgap measure will probably be needed to buy more time to negotiate a longer-term deal.

With tax reform taking the bulk of the Congress's attention, efforts to hammer out a spending deal with Democrats have moved slowly.

Republicans will need the support of at least eight Democrats in the Senate to approve either a spending bill or a short-term extension. For Democrats, the spending battle is one of a few leverage points to advance their priorities, such as passing an immigration fix for immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as young children.

Republicans need Democratic support to postpone the deadline as well, meaning Democrats could make demands and threaten a shutdown over the short-term extension.

Democrats, however, seem unlikely to force a fight on a short-term spending measure if they feel there is progress toward a larger deal a few weeks later.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a recent press conference that she opposed a longer-term continuing resolution, but wouldn't rule out a brief extension.

"Sometimes there's another week tacked on just to do the legislation, that's a different story," she said.

Even with a few extra weeks, Congress will have a lot on its plate.

Republicans want to pass a final version of their tax-reform bill before Christmas, putting the self-imposed tax deadline around the same time as the new spending deadline.

How did you come to this conclusion from this article? I seriously think I need to brush up on my reading comprehension. It doesn’t say anything about democrats or even Ryan suggesting the spending bill be pushed into next year .

Ryan said the House GOP's goal was to pass a long-term spending bill by the end of the year, but suggested lawmakers may not be able to do so by a Dec. 8 deadline.

“We’re not talking about going into next year, we’re talking about getting it done this year,” Ryan said at a press conference on Tuesday.

I’ll wait for your response.

Yup, from another article they're thinking of moving it to around December 22nd, just in time for Xmas. How nice heh? lol

I misread I thought they were pushing it towards the beginning of next year. Relax, breathe. Lol!

Pelosi said that they would only agree to extend it a week or two for appropriation legislation to be written. They won’t agree to anything past December. Republicans are delaying the inevitable.

What is the point of extending it only for couple of days?

Seems like Republicans are looking for a way to screw Democrats out of a deal. I don't quite get their end game yet.

This is basically a full on admission that he doesn't have votes and he's banking on some democratic good will here to help him kick the can down the road.

Well price went up, DA now and the lights stay on for 3 more months.

If DA is attached to continuation then it is not attached to the omnibus. Ryans promise will be fulfilled!

This means DA could becme attached to the short term. Another chance for me to become a marine.

So far I'm the only one in this forum with enough balls to want a marine corps enlistment, that makes me super elite.

Two shoes thrown for lack of patriotism.

why are u so gung ho about this? i have a masters degree and will be joining the air force as a commissioned officer once we get legalized but u dont see me waving my dick around about it.

and telling people how to be patriotic is in fact not patriotic.

we get it dude, u have the biggest balls in this forum but actually u dont, Dreamers who signed up via MAVNI have bigger balls than u. u shouldve signed up back then when u had the chance.

this is America dawg, you dont get to tell other people how to be “patriotic”

I didn't qualify for MAVNI cause there are too many Mexicans in the Marines already. Marines want people who speak exotic languages and asians.

Also marines slots were extremely competitive and in short supply. I'm still most patriotic.

Checkmate Liberal.

that wasnt the point,

when they opened up MAVNI for Dreamers, DACAers signed up to whatever branch they can get because they were willing to sign up and die for this country when the opportunity was given to them.

wtf were u doing? u were on this forum measuring how big your dick is to everyone. when they opened up mavni for all branches of the armed forces u pussied out. youre waiting to “serve” when its convenient for you.

checkmate, cuck.

cuck.

MAVNI was only really done by US Army. Other branches technically did it do, Navy recruited like 50 people, Airforce like 5, and Marines and Coast Guard didn't seek any MAVNI applications.

Also anyone out of those 50-60 non-Army applicants was a medical professional, not someone that kinda speaks another language.

Nope MAVNI opened up with very limited slots. You either spoke the language or had x skill or you were fucked. End of story. Your information is wrong.

then both informations given was wrong then,

but my point was that DREAMERs when given a chance to serve took it and made it work. they didnt choose and pick what branch they want. they served when they were given the chance.

but for a guy to come in here telling people how to be patriotic is just ridiculous.

Hey bud. Informations is a non-countable noun so it can't be in the plural. It should just be "information" and you need to place "pieces of" before. So it should be "Then both pieces of information given were wrong."

What were some of the languages DREAMers spoke, that got them into the MAVNI program? I wonder if Russian, Ukrainian, or Polish would have helped me, since Spanish I'm sure was not included...

Polish and Russian were on the list. I am not sure about Ukrainian. They also want you to be a native or have background with the given language.

So getting Rosetta Stone for Swahili wouldn't get you in unless you happened to get stranded in Uganda for some period of time.

Never lived in Russia or any of the former Soviet states. I have a large interest in Russian history, culture, language, and dedicated a significant amount of time engaging in learning. I did have Russian friends growing up, dated a Ukrainian chick (culture similar to Russians), so I have a good foundation on how they think. I may not be native, but that is as close as one can get.

Btw, I'd avoid Rosetta Stone like the plague. Polyglots, or those who learn many languages, don't use this product as it is over priced and not as effective as other approaches.

I will be making a language learning thread soon, dedicated to providing information to those on how to learn languages and take advantage of free resources online. Stay tunned...

Used it more as an example than anything. Taking two semesters of Russian in college probably wouldn't qualify you either. They want background more than they want fluency.

I am self taught for 8 years. College language classes go too slow. I can write, speak, read, and understand Russian well enough that I can write a decent academic paper and live in the country with minimal disruption in my ability to live comfortably.

I was close to teaching English in Russia right after college. Obviously I didn't or I wouldn't be here haha.
