4 Dreamers Stage Protest at Macy's Thanksgiving Parade
 

Four people protesting President Trump’s immigration policies staged a sit-down protest and briefly blocked the Thanksgiving Day Parade route before cops removed them Thursday.

The protesters are young people who came into the country undocumented, but were allowed to stay, according to the Seed Project.

President Trump ordered the repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in September. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in October announced the program would be canceled in March.

Congress is now considering the measure and debating whether it should be included in a pending budget bill.


"We want permanent protection for undocumented youth, and more focus on the fact that all undocumented youth are suffering, whether they're DACA or not,” said Piash Ahamed, 26, a college student from Woodbridge, N.J.

The protesters, dressed in red T-shirts, sat down in the middle of the road on Central Park West at 70th St. and were soon ushered off by police. They were not arrested, spokesman Roberto Juarez said.

Barbara Hernandez, a 25-year-old early childhood teacher, came all the way from California to participate.

"It was scary at the beginning. I was scared of being arrested, I was scared of losing my job,” Hernandez said. “But once there, I felt empowered, having them with me, and knowing it wasn't just for me — it was for everyone, not just the Dreamers, but all 11 million."

While I support civil disobedience, I believe the pressure should be on the Democratic Party and GOP leadership, and not the general public.

You’re talking about those 4 “protestors” messing the parade for regular people trying to enjoy Thanksgiving and the parade which is an age old tradition for Americans? You call that putting their lives on the line? LOL. Believe me these are the type of people who are our MAIN OBSTACLE in passing DA. Don't make it sound like we are losers here sitting and just criticizing people on a forum. We are just as hard working. We've done countless of advocating and hard work and we've done justice to DACA. We are the reason why DA is about to pass. Fuck those losers ruining Thanksgiving for us.

I understand. It just bothers me to see keyboard warriors be so brazen about their opinions. Something inside of me says "atleast there trying," while most people would just judge them. If we, out of all people, can't understand what it's like to be losing it all and not being able to rest. How could we ever hope that the Citizens of the US see our struggle? See what I'm saying? Those people have not even an ounce of peace, that on a holiday, they are fighting for the right to stay in the country they love. Let's not be so fast to judge them.

They are not trying for anything my dude. They are being hired to sabotage the whole Dream Act with Border Security. In fact they want no DA to pass at all. I am telling you either they were hired or they are all top leaders of big immigrant "organizations" who are all citizens and permanent residents. They want no DA because they want their donations to keep flowing in. The real people who are trying are those who are advocating in D.C. for a BIPARTISAN compromise. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is no place to protest anything. Breitbart and other losers will use this as a weapon against us and you know what I won't even blame them for that. I can literally do more than those losers by making calls to Senators and asking them to demand DA in the spending bill. That's how you make a difference. Not by going out and trying to become famous at the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade ruining Thanksgiving for little kids and families. The majority of Americans already see our struggle. There is GOP support. All that is needed is us to make calls to pressure Congress to include DA fix in the Spending bill. We can't demand a "Clean Bill." It just won't happen.

I agree, this is upsetting. We are all in the same situation, I’m angry, frustrated, stressed, etc too, but I’m not going to sit in the middle of a parade to get my point across. Especially at an innocent event. But I will call my congressman, email, tweet, text, spread the word and have my friends spread the word to get my point across.

While I am against that stupid organization that shut down Pelosis press conference, I have always been ok with a clean DA bill as a starting point for compromise. That organization and many activists out there are completely against a compromise. They have said that they would be against a compromise that includes wall money, enforcement measures or even border security. That stance to me seems really stupid. It’s almost like those organizations want us to stay illegal for their own benefit.

Agreed. But as we've seen, they've continued to pressure them to do more (i.e. interrupting Pelosi's press conference).

I think the point of this though was to remind the general public that this still has yet to be solved.
