Spotlight on House After Senate Failure to Pass DACA Fix

Futile effort’
Leadership has signaled it will continue whipping support for the Goodlatte-McCaul bill and the authors are exploring further changes to win over holdouts, but some members are questioning the point of that effort.

“I don’t think there’s a chance to pass a Republican-only immigration bill out of the House,” said Rep. Charlie Dent, co-chairman of the moderate Tuesday Group.

The Pennsylvania Republican also said there was a “less than zero percent chance” a partisan GOP measure could pass the Senate.

The only reason for the House to pass a partisan bill is to provide political cover for members who will vote against any final bipartisan compromise, Dent said. “And that really pisses me off.”

The Goodlatte-McCaul bill is not a “viable vehicle to get us to the finish line,” Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart said, suggesting it would be better for the House to move onto something that is.

“To spend time on something that’s a futile effort when we have very little time, to me, doesn’t sound like a good effort,” the Florida Republican said.

Among the many issues Diaz-Balart has with the Goodlatte-McCaul is that it is much more expansive than the four pillars Trump has said must be addressed.

The bill would authorize the Department of Justice to withhold grants from sanctuary cities, require employers to use the E-Verify program to check employees’ immigration status and create an agricultural guest worker program.

Many lawmakers have raised concerns about the guest worker program, saying it could take away jobs from U.S. workers.

“Potato growers are opposed to it. Dairy industries are opposed to it,” Rep. Mike Simpson said of concerns he’s hearing from Idaho constituents.

If nothing could pass senate nothing will pass the house

The votes are there if Ryan allows a bipartisan bill to be brought up (based on all democrats voting + those GOP who have already cosponsored DREAM Act like legislation). The votes aren't there for Goodlatte type bill.

There was multiple choices for bipartisan bills in the senate and none passed
So even if somehow it passed the House it won’t pass the senate

It would put pressure again on the Senate if it passed the House. I agree it's unlikely (not because the votes aren't there but because of Speaker Ryan). There's a lot of talk from Senators that the order of the vote of the bills was the reason none of them passed. They are saying if the 'Common Sense' plan (led by Collins) was voted last it would have passed. I don't know if there's any truth to that or if it's just another excuse for why Senators voted against it.

Let's be realistic guys... Nothing is happening at this point.

Due to the recent court decisions, Congress no longer has the pressure to deliver by March 5th... And this Congress can't get anything done without a hard deadline. It's like asking a bunch of 2 year olds to get their act together :-(

There was an opportunity to pass a bipartisan bill in the Senate, but Trump and his right wing racist xenophobic hardliners torpedoed that deaal. They tried to use us to completely change our immigration system (even legal immigration). He was clearly negotiating in bad faith and the Democrats were not going to swallow that one.

This is such a contentious issue, I have come to the conclusion that you can only truly solve this issue with the same party in control of the White House and filibuster proof majorities in the Senate & the House.

Not really. At this point in time IDGAF what happens. I just hate the “guys... let’s be honest...” posts. They contribute nothing positive and only add more anxiety to some of the people that visit this forum.

Hard to contribute something”positive” when all the signs are pointed towards inaction by congress...

I understand the frustration my friend. I guess the point I am trying to make is that we should not hope too much from this Congress.

It may or may not happen... But we should be prepared regardless

Relax. There's a bunch of us still being optimistic. And staying positive. It is actually now the time to be vocal about this because we've got the Congress and the President's attention. We are stronger united. We are fighting for this. Don't give up. If you think that you can't do that then it's time to look elsewhere.

I'm seriously considering marriage and adjusting. I just feel better knowing that I can control the outcome, instead or relying on Congress.

Lol, I never said I was “drowning in sorrow, misery and self pity” - so not sure how you got that idea.. I was only stating the current outlook of our situation.

I’m completely ready for what ever outcome, I made sure to have a back up plan B, C, and D in anticipation of such scenario.

So getting married is under your control? If I controlled that, I would’ve already gotten married. A 5 year path to citizenship is better than any possible outcome that could come from Congress.

Go and get married already if you somehow have control on that.

Not lecturing, just stating an opinion based on current possibilities after DACA losing the momentum it had last few weeks.

As a matter of fact, I’ve already started putting in motion back up plan B.

Man if you already given up on the situation, then why in the world are you here?

Why do you feel the need to get everyone else to give up?

Do you need to feel validated if everyone else gives up?
