Top Democrat Says Election Will Decide DACA's Fate

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has long led the push to provide a permanent legal status to the so-called "DREAMers" — young adults in the United States illegally who were brought to the country as children.

Durbin was in the mix on multiple bipartisan deals in recent months, as the clock ticked toward a March 5 expiration of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which President Trump decided in September 2017 to end.

But with Congress still gridlocked on DACA and the Supreme Court refusing to intervene in two federal cases negating that deadline, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat seems to be throwing in the towel.

"This election, the election of new members to the House and Senate, will decide the fate of this issue," Durbin told NPR's All Things Considered on Wednesday.

Next time , it’s going to be the 2020 presidential elections.

and then they will say they cant pass it because Trump will veto it and it will depend on the presidential election. Old news.

What utter cynical bullshit. He did not even offer HIS bill for a vote. In fact, he did not even really push for it. Daca is expected to lose in court. Why should he be re-elected?

Watch out for the budget increases for DHS enforcement, more detention beds. Watch him NOT stand up for the undocumented community.

This is unacceptable. Corporate Democrats will be voted out.

Resign! Sen. Durbin Resign! Resign right now! You have been toying with us since 2001. You are a failure! How come you were not able to whip the votes back in 2010, when we had a 59-41 majority? We had 2 republicans that voted yes for the dream act, but you could not get 58 democrats to vote yes for it! 5 democratic senators voted No (Sen. Tester who is still in the Senate is one of them) and one did not even vote (Sen. Manchin who is also still in the Senate). Stop using us for your reelection! Go away!

I guess even some of us who consider themselves Liberals learned this, which is a good sign that Dreamers are not as partisan as they think we are.

Fuck the Dems, Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP.

Give us our shit and leave us alone.

Yeah even if he pushed it probably would of gotten worst support compared to the Grassley bill. With DACA being temporarily reinstated some of you guys will be OK till election and see what happens . Us other DREAMers just have to survive till election. Nothing will get done with this congress.

Try again with next year's budget and new Congress members?

Re: Top Democrat Says Election Will Decide DACA's Fate

Quite frankly this was they’re plan all along. This year they’re message will be “give us Congress and we will protect DACA”, next year they’re message will be “give us the White House and we will protect DACA”.

Not surprised to be honest. Only positive to this is that at least we will get some renewals in thanks to the Courts.

Trump is talking about a comprehensive gun reform in the same way he talked about a DACA compromise during that meeting. I wonder how many days it will take him to change his mind on that?

JJ Glo 02-28-2018 09:49 PM

Re: Top Democrat Says Election Will Decide DACA's Fate

Democrats are salivating at the new polls showing how many Americans support DACA. Watch for the ads coming out of Trump cancelling DACA while they did very little to try and reach a compromise. We got played folks. This was the plan all along, just like Trump wants to use us for his wall money, Dems want to use us for votes. You heard Schumer himself say it, wait until Dreamers start being deported. Neither party gives a flying ass about us.

Aah, there it is. The cat is finally out of the hat ready to string us along even more.

I wonder if he really believed something would pass back when the government was re-opened. His speech about seeing something he hadn’t seen in years and how everyone would help reach a solution. He has been pretty silent since then. It’s like he gave up. Same with Graham.

What a let down these past few months have been. It’s so sad they can’t reach a consensus on us, the ‘sympathetic’ immigration group.

Re: Top Democrat Says Election Will Decide DACA's Fate

This is what he Tweeted yesterday:

Senator Dick Durbin on Twitter: "Wrong. The deadline to pass the #DreamAct has already passed. Thousands of Dreamers have already lost protection and work permits, and living by the next court ruling is no way to plan a future. President Trump created this mess, and we can’t lose focus on solving it. https://t.co/vSqsAK2aHM"
https://mobile.twitter.com/SenatorDu...99516163940353

It's like he is testing to see the reaction. This is not acceptable; people cannot depend on the court when is his and the other useless politicians' jobs to fix this. Now, not in 2-3 years.

Democrats won't do anything. A good predictor of future behavior is past behavior. We know the Demoncrats had the majority years back. They had the ability to pass the Dream Act but failed because they are cowards that don't give a fuck about you or me.

I don't know about you guys, but I am excited for the Blue Wave, but not for the reasons you think. I am looking forward to it, so my colleagues here have some sense knocked into them.

Umm I still support the Democrats. Sure, they’ve been disappointing and they should have used their leverage, but the GOP are not going to save us either. We need more progressives and non corporate Democrats to win, and then there’s a chance for change.

Swim19 why are you so against the GOP? Yes there are topics that I disagree with such as their abortion stance, climate change, welfare, taxes, and so on. But when it comes to DACA or immigration you need to understand that both parties need to work together to get things moving.

The democrats solely are not going to get this done.

I’m all for compromise, but with the DACA compromise every time there was any progress WH then did everything they could to derail it. WH also kept moving the goal post. First it was wall money (Democrats were willing to give that) and suddenly there’s the 4 stupid pillars that have nothing to do with protecting DREAMers.

The Democrats are partly to blame, but Trump/GOP are more at fault.

Imo what happened is that trump(Miller) went greedy after the democrats agreed to wall money and i really think democrats wanted that to have excuses that trump was the one not wanting to compromise to punt this issue.
Now we just wait for trump to soften and box in democrats with just border security in exchange of dreamers. Hopefully that happens lol

Dream act is a fucking softball, there is no reason whatsoever why it should not be passed and quite frankly can't understand how someone can be with Republicans on this issue.

The day you realize that corporate democrats just want votes using us. And republicans want to use us for their racist agenda you will understand why some of us side with the republicans.

Yeah he gave some dreamers a chance to secure his reelection. And yes they owe us something since they campaign out of our backs and make promises. If they wouldnt do that then yeah your point would be valid.

How many US citizens consider DACA a major issue as it relates to whom they vote for?
