Action on guns and immigration screeches to a halt in Congress

On immigration, a federal court order blocking President Trump’s effort to end an Obama-era program protecting Dreamers, immigrants brought into the country illegally as children, has taken the pressure off Congress to act.

Now lawmakers are not expected to touch the issue before Election Day.

I am still thankful the judge allowed renewals. Most of us expire in the coming months and I can’t imagine the stress and anxiety if renewals hadn’t been allowed.

Lol, some were saying it cost us legalization.

Again, I mentioned we should definitely look to the courts for the check and balance over the term of the Presidency. The federal court will take some time to get through the case. Possibly even beyond the term of the current President.

I really hope the federal court takes it sweet time.

This makes Flake's daca patch idea even dumber, especially because of the border security concessions. Why concede on that shit when we have DACA now without any concessions that present a danger to the community.

Can anyone give approximate timeline until courts kill daca for good?

I am hearing all kinds of dates

Scotus will issue their ruling in December, is it true?

"It’s unclear to many GOP lawmakers and aides what exactly will get done before Election Day. The House will be on recess for 14 weeks between now and Nov. 6. That includes the customary recess for the entire month of August"

Inexcusable from all involved.

Watch out for Pelosi allowing funding to harm immigrant communities in the appropriations budget.

All of these establishment politicians need to be primaried and voted out. They want to discourage people from holding them accountable and fade out. Like hell we will while long-term undocumented people continue to be hunted.

Totally agree with you. Just know that there are groups in DC holding them accountable. There is also pressure from afar.

This is bullshit.

Yeah, I am hearing SCOTUS can possibly rule on the issue in the fall or early January.

Re: Action on guns and immigration screeches to a halt in Congress

The request from the Supreme Court to the circuit court was to expedite their answer to the case. You are looking at 2-3 months.

They need to ensure at a minimum protection for all Dreamers from deportation, even if the benefit portion (employment authorization) is not immediately available to the expanded group.

Democratic leaders can pressure DHS to re-establish enforcement priorities like they did with Obama. Their hands are not as tied as they claim. Do your job.

I am still very disappointed in how this turned out, but thankful that the courts have decided in our favor for now. At least it gives us some time to renew and figure out our own path to permanent status.

The Courts could have waited. The rulings were done on purpose. Political games all around

Only 2 - 3 months? I thought we have more time than that.

Isn't the Supreme Court just ruling on Trump ending DACA and not on DACA itself?

I know a lot of you don't want to hear it but any deal that would have been passed would have majorly screwed over other immigrants so perhaps this is for the best. Everything is on ice (not ICE) for now and the November elections. If there is a major ass kicking and Republicans lose the house and senate then maybe Trump will see the writing on the wall and the Democrats will have real leverage.

If the Blue Wave doesn't happen, we will be screwed with more partisan bickering and nothing get done for another few years. A lot of dreamers will be entering their 40s at the point.

Then it was the role of the bitch ass congressional Democrats to grow some balls and force a better deal. But, no. They are the biggest bitches on planet earth.

You know whats so funny.

When the California judge issued that injunction, I was super pissed off...IMO at the time, it seemed like a political ploy engineered by the Dems to indirectly take away urgency from the DACA debate so they can piggyback off of the Republicans "See it isn't urgent anymore" rhetoric...and this way they could keep DACA as a political football.

But now looking back, it just seemed I was probably looking a gift horse in the mouth.

LOL, what that judge did is a blessing right now...

How would they "force" a deal? By shutting down gov't that they were clearly getting blamed for? What would that have accomplished? Trump laughing at Dems as the favorability poll show Dems are getting torched? Leading to midterm loss? What do you think will happen when this GOP gets a mandate like that?

For fuck's sake. Stop bitching (about the people on our side, no less) and start THINKING.

That's easy for us to say given that we're one issue non-voters. They have to answer to a whole bunch of other people who can vote and shutting down the government again would turn many of them off.

Also, I'm not sure what good it does to name call the only people on our side.

That's giving these BITCHES a pass for reprehensible hypocrisy. How funny they consider us Americans but not enough for these critical points. We are only Americans come the elections. GREAT.

Really easy for them to say wait for the next election. Maybe, it's something you can cope with since you have a pending family application, which I hope gets accepted. The rest of us don't have that dude.

Nope. They can and should still take action by 3/23.

Flake should offer his bill for votes and see what self-claimed supporters, Dem and Rep, do on the record.

They could have done this in September. And the shutdown was not only about Dreamers. It was one day (weekends do not count as fed agencies close).

People do not have until the next election because they are currently at risk. Pelosi went on record to say that immigration reform can always pass in some form in the future. The future is now. I'm sorry, but there are no excuses. When people need help, you give it right when they need it.

Good luck getting McConnell to bring up any DACA related bill to a vote.

The court objected to the way (no notice and comment period) he stopped the program. He has full authority to rescind Daca, write a new order and implement it.

What is the Democrats' plan if he does rescind it tomorrow by publishing in the register? No word or action on how to protect and move forward. That is very worrying.

Now he will come to the middle and look like the savior for the dreamers.
