Republicans Look Ready To Force A Vote On Democrats’ DACA Proposal

Quote:

When Meadows was asked if there were some Republicans who just could never get behind a special pathway, even if the legislation included the border security measures like a wall that conservatives want, the Freedom Caucus chairman said that was a “thornier question.”

“A special pathway is almost as bad as the ‘amnesty’ word, and so we’re looking at ways for citizenship that does not disadvantage people who have been in line for a long time,” Meadows said.

But for the GOP moderates who are on the verge of forcing a vote, that special pathway is a key component of any immigration bill ― and that makes a compromise difficult.

There are plenty of Republicans who are willing to compromise. Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told HuffPost on Wednesday that even though he opposes a special pathway to legal permanent residence, he was open to discussion on the issue if the other priorities like a wall were satisfied.

“But if you’re coming to me with a special pathway, you gotta have these other categories before I’m willing to negotiate,” Walker said.

Quote:

Unfortunately for Republicans, there are a critical number of GOP lawmakers who aren’t willing to negotiate on that topic. For the moderates who want to address immigration, a pathway has to be part of the discussion. If it’s not, they might as well force a vote with Democrats through the discharge petition, score the political points associated with posturing on the issue, and wait for the dynamics of Congress to change ― perhaps for Democrats to take the majority ― before lawmakers actually find a solution.

And for the immigration hard-liners, like Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), there’s no compromise to be had.

King told reporters Wednesday that he wanted to avoid all votes on any immigration bill.

“A majority of the Republicans here have never voted for amnesty,” King said, using an immigration term favored by hard-liners. “You put a compromise bill up on the floor, and all but 10 or 12 Republicans vote for amnesty? They’re forever marked by that and they can never get their virtue back.”

For those immigration opponents, it’s better to have a couple dozen Republicans side with Democrats than have 218 Republicans find consensus on an immigration measure, even if it is more GOP-friendly. Hard-liners don’t see the Senate taking up any immigration legislation that is the result of a discharge petition, and they don’t think Trump would sign such a bill.

@ChadPergram
Fox is told that if Hse GOP COnf isn’t able to come to an immigration agreement, mbrs who are ready to sign the discharge petition will likely make a beeline from the meeting for the House chamber to sign the discharge petition tomorrow. "It will happen right now" said 1 mbr

If GOP Conf reaches consensus on immigration at mtg tomorrow, lawmakers considering signing the discharge petition will likely hold off. The GOP leadership will have to get the proposal presented by Ryan into legislative text over the next few days.

Time is of the essence on immigration. Discharge petition supporters face a deadline of June 11 to collect the relevant signatures. Lawmakers could then sign the discharge petition early next week if the the text of the legislation isn’t to their liking.

I read the following piece last night. It states there's a plethora of republicans willing to sign the petition if a consensus isn't reached today.

Some people here are coming unhinged - and they have Daca! Imagine if they did not.

The discharge petition is the best chance for resolution of this problem. Dream act + border security are the baseline and beginning of immigration reform. This is all happening precisely because House Reps grew balls and decided enough is enough. Let it happen.

How do we force the senate to take up anything that passes the house? How do you prevent Drumpf from vetoing it? Answer those questions please!

Let’s say the discharge petition passes, then what? What’s the next step in your ideal scenario to get us legalized?

From source in the GOP Immigration meeting. Says Ryan said the pt isn’t to force the issue at this time but to head off the discharge petition. Ryan says there is no leadership plan, per se. It’s a result of mtgs w/moderates/Freedom Caucus

Delay, delay is the Republican way

Then on the other side of the coin, if House passes a bill conservative GOP/Freedom Caucus can agree to, Trump agrees to, and that the Turtle will agree to bring up for a vote - it will unlikely get the votes needed in the Senate (Democrats won't agree and possibly Moderate GOP). And this is why unless Trump or GOP Leadership can get behind the narrow deal of Wall for DREAM Act, it is very unlikely anything will pass.

No deal out of GOP DACA meeting. "We're at the beginning of the family meeting," discharge supporter @MarkAmodeiNV2 tells reporters.

@rachaelmbade

@RepMcCaul says that moderates will NOT move forward with the discharge petition following this meeting. But I don’t know if that’s true. There is a LOT of happy talk but NO AGREEMENT on a path forward. If moderates drop the discharge petition, that’s a huge cave without any win

They are stalling . They need to sign the discharge petition today!

Leave her alone. Her deffered action is probably due to a pending case in immigration court which puts her on even more unstable ground than DACA recepients.

Her posts can be a little annoying but that goes for a lot of members of this forum. And it's completely understandable, we're all frustrated and nervous.
