Sessions Ends Asylum for Most Domestic-Abuse and Gang-Violence Victims

Quote:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered federal judges Monday to stop granting asylum to most of the tens of thousands of applicants who claim to be fleeing gang violence and domestic abuse.

Acting on his authority to issue decisions that serve as binding precedent for federal judges, Sessions made the case that victims of “private” crimes are not entitled, simply by virtue of their status as victims, to asylum in the U.S.

“Generally, claims by aliens pertaining to domestic violence or gang violence perpetrated by non-governmental actors will not qualify for asylum,” Sessions wrote in his ruling. “The mere fact that a country may have problems effectively policing certain crimes — such as domestic violence or gang violence — or that certain populations are more likely to be victims of crime, cannot itself establish an asylum claim.”

The move comes after Sessions hinted at the crackdown earlier Monday during a training session for immigration judges. It is sure to be criticized by advocates of more permissive immigration policy as an affront to the humanity of asylum seekers fleeing violence in their home countries.

I honestly don't see a problem with this decision.

We cant help everyone. Plus asylum should be more for political and religious reasons. At least that's what I thought it was for.

My god. Please stfu. Isn't that how a large population of DREAMers was created. Parents fleeing gang violence in places like el Salvador and Guatemala.

It's like some of you are in lock step agreement with what the administration does simply to rationalize. Because you know tomorrow they can come down hard on you. "We can't help everyone." Then let's start stratifying which DREAMers should be most IMMEDIATELY helped. You're pathetic.

I have a feeling you would vote to deport dreamers if you were a U.S. citizen.

Exactly - we are literally in the same bucket as them. We have a form of temporary protected status..

What form do you file for DACA? I-821D. What's I-821? Application for Temporary Protected Status :D

I stand by my comment.

Im not in favor of open borders and no enforcement.

I left a lawless nation for a reason.

The US Department of Justice has statutory authority to do this.

Every administration is different.

And yes the DREAMer population IS different.

I dont like being clumped with every person at the border.

Okkkuur!!!

But you're not different.

It's great that you've drawn a line in the dirt around yourself and said "I'm special - I don't belong to that group just on the other side of the line," but the reality is that you're still on the wrong side of the real line. You're a "dirty illegal" just like the rest of us. Stop pretending that we're special in any way in the eyes of the law.

Any solution that we ask for needs to come with as large of an umbrella as possible. This is so that when the negotiating time comes, that umbrella can shrink and the people at the core are still comfortably covered. I don't know what your qualifying parameters are for the DREAM Act, but I'm sure you would have a different song if you were just 1 day past aging out ;)

Respectable. Btw using your logic you arent a dreamer because you chose to leave your country (not your parents) because it was "lawless". Why you dont self-deport so you can really stand by your comment.

You're annoying. If we get no relief, my only consolation would be that dreamers like you are also fucked.

I love how so many people on here think they are immune to the same cruelty that other immigrants suffer. You know the old saying "First they came for..."

You guys are right, the next DACA proposal should be attached with TPS, and new qualifications for asylum seekers.

never for one second believe dreamers are a 'special' group... Sessions and others like him would come down on dreamers with full fury if they could, plus they already are with trying to kill DACA.
