Twitter News/Updates 06/21/18

I ask that everyone post Twitter updates in a single thread and any relevant news articles ahead of the vote on the GOP Compromise Bill in a single thread.
Happy Thursday. Playbook is out — massive day on the hill for the president and gop.

I’m about to talk about it all w @Morning_Joe
- @JakeSherman

Today's immigration votes will prove if Republicans are capable of governing
WASHINGTON — A crisis at the border. An outraged American public. Uncertainty about what comes next. And today, the House of Representatives is set to vote on two comprehensive immigration bills — the conservative Goodlatte bill and a more moderate GOP bill — that will determine if the Republican-led House is capable of governing.

NBC’s Alex Moe and Marianna Sotomayor have some of the behind-the-scenes drama from yesterday: “Republican leadership huddled in Speaker Paul Ryan’s office after House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows claimed the compromise immigration bill was not ready for primetime which leadership later called a ‘miscommunication’ and NOT the Freedom Caucus moving the goal posts at the 11th hour as some moderates have suggested. Leadership says the immigration votes are STILL HAPPENING Thursday.”

More from Moe and Sotomayor: “Out of the loop it appears are the moderates — who were part of the group that negotiated this compromise deal with the Freedom Caucus and leadership — who say they are unaware of the changes the Freedom Caucus are asking for. Rep. Denham … told Chuck Todd on MTP Daily that “it is unbeknownst to him” what the Freedom Caucus wants. Moreover, he said that everything that the conservative caucus wanted was included in the final compromise bill text.”

Every time that House Republicans refuse to reach across the aisle — after all, both the Goodlatte bill and the more moderate one are GOP-sponsored bills — House Republicans are held hostage by this Freedom Caucus-vs.-moderate battle.

So we have four questions:

1. Can any bill win a majority of support?

2. If not, which bill gets more support — the Goodlatte bill or the moderate one?

3. Do the votes get pulled from the floor if it looks like nothing can pass?

4. And most importantly of all, are House Republicans capable of governing?

Why would they support something they had no input in? Compromise between who? If they wanted Democratic support then they should have invited them to the table.

Correct, this is not a compromise bill. As Goodlatte called it on national tv it's Goodlatte and Goodlatte 2.0 (idiot)

both bills will fail, and hopefully moderates wake up and compromise with Dems on the USA Act, a real bipartisan bill.

Compromise between ModGOP and FC.

ModGOP is basically Dems. No different.

It is sick that Dems want us DACA to suffer in uncertainty so they can score political points.

Sick

Never wanted bills to fail more in my life. These bills cause more harm then good... Even those that benefit from it walk a thin line that they are likely to fall from.

What do you guys predict will happen today? Let's see who gets it right. My guess is both bills will fail to get enough votes...the blame game will follow.

Trump tweet: What is the purpose of the Hse doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Dems in the Senate, & the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms). GOPers must get rid of the stupid Filibuster Rule-it is killing you!

Or here's a crazy idea...work on a bipartisan solution.

This is why I am concerned about McConnell’s silence. They know his agenda is dead in the water come November. If he goes nuclear to pass this bill it gives Trunp what he has wanted all along.

I don't think he'll go nuclear because they know they won't be in power forever.

All Democrats did was to obstruct Dreamer legislation. It was Obama who gave us DACA. Not Democrats. Obama was the president of both Democrats and Republicans.

Calling it a compromise bill doesn't make it so. Thousands of Dreamers including many DACA recipients won't benefit from Goodlatte 2.0.

Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) said he told the president that he would be voting against the compromise bill at the Wednesday meeting, saying it provided amnesty to DREAMers’ parents. The current bill allows DREAMers who have become citizens to apply for green cards for their parents.

Outside conservative groups, like the Heritage Foundation think tank, have told members to vote against the compromise bill.

Ryan has said he will call up a vote on both bills regardless of their chances of passing. His message is clear: This is Republicans’ last chance to actually vote and pass an immigration overhaul out of the House before the midterm elections.

But on Wednesday, even the prospect of a vote wasn’t a certainty.

HOUSE will hit the floor for votes at around 11:15, where they will vote on a procedural motion to get onto debate for the Goodlatte bill.

BTW — this kills the discharge petition. Goodnight to that.

We expect the House to begin debate on the “conservative” immigration bill around noon et. They will likely vote on that bill sometime between 1 and 2 pm et. That bill has always been well short of the votes to pass and faces a big uphill battle.

After the Hse finishes the farm bill, the Hse again turns to immigration. Up in the queue then is the "moderate" bill crafted by the GOP ldrshp. That immigration bill provides $25b in direct funding for the wall. Has a better chance to pass than 1st farm bill. Vote in late pm

Nope. It would actually help the discharge petition effort if moderates were serious about it. So far it seems like they were never serious about it. All they wanted was a vote so that they can campaign and say that they tried.

What to expect in the House today
Here’s a preview of the action in the House today:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is expected to address reporters at 10:45 a.m.

From around 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., the House will have its first procedural votes on the more conservative immigration bill. Then debate on the bill will begin.

House Speaker Paul Ryan will brief reporters at 11:30 a.m.

From 1:10 to 1:40 p.m., the House will vote on the conservative immigration bill. That bill is expected to fail.

Then, from around 2:50 to 3:20 p.m., the House will hold procedural votes on the compromise immigration bill, followed by debate on the bill.

The House is expected to vote on the compromise bill at about 4:50 to 5:20 p.m. – but, as with all things Congress, this timeline is subject to change.

‘It’s going to blow up,’ says House member on immigration bill

Rep. Ryan Costello, a Republican from Pennsylvania who is not running for reelection, predicted that the House would not pass an immigration bill today.

Costello said in an interview that President Trump “knows exactly what he’s doing” with tweets about immigration. Trump told House Republicans that his Twitter account was powerful, he said.

Trump earlier tweeted that any Republican immigration legislation could pass the Senate, which GOP aides said could hurt efforts to pass a bill in the House.

“We’re going to blame Democrats and at the same time give cover to people who may not want to vote for the compromise bill,” Costello said.

This is not compromise bill , they are all republican bills try to kick out as many people as possible.
