Bank of America Freezes Family's Accounts After Demanding Proof of Citizenship

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bank-...154501913.html
Quote:

A Kansas couple says Bank of America blocked access to the account they’ve had with the bank since the early 2000s after they ignored a form demanding proof of citizenship from the husband, who happens to be a native of Wichita.

Josh Collins and Jessica Salazar Collins say they assumed the form was a scam, given their long relationship with the bank, but when they showed up at a bank branch, access was denied, with a flag next to Josh’s name saying “citizenship”. The account was unfrozen after he supplied a driver’s license.

Bank of America, which recently moved to stop lending to companies that make assault rifles, did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Fortune, but told the Kansas City Star it’s “required by law to maintain complete and accurate records for all of our customers and may periodically request information, such as country of citizenship and proof of U.S. residency”.

Other banking organizations, though, said proof of citizenship wasn’t federally required. Rather, banks only need the name, date of birth, address, and social security number of the account holders.

Bank of America, though, told the Star it is the company’s standard practice to inquire about citizen status when opening a new account or updating customer information on an existing one. And all customers will eventually receive update notices asking about their citizenship and dual citizenship status.

Those that don’t return the updates could face the same issue the Collins family did.

Well, it's pretty clear that BOA doesn't want our business. If you know someone without status and have a BOA account, tell them to switch bank before their hard earn money get stolen by BOA.

I bank with a credit union, no nonsense so far.

Also this practice of banks not lending to "assault rifles" manufacturers should be illegal. More people playing politics when they shouldn't be. More virtue signaling and undoubtedly losing customers and business.

I left Wells Fargo because they were esentially doing the same shit but with their credit cards, I'm with BOA now.

I’ve never banked with BOA. My step dad (who’s a citizen) has had many issues with them. I have been with US Bank since 2009 with thankfully no issues.

Switching from wells fargo ASAP.

Chase, BOA and wells fargo appear to be giving issues, any other branch that we could use?

I make quite a bit, i dont want to face bullshit with my money.

Before DACA came out, I was able to open an account with Chase by just providing my passport. I just told the banker "it's complicated" he said no problem, didn't ask any further questions and opened me an account.

To open an account with Chase, I only had to provide my ID and foreign passport. They didn't ask any question.

Re: Bank of America Freezes Family's Accounts After Demanding Proof of Citizenship

From what I understood was that the guy had not answer the question of citizenship and because he fail to give a response the account was frozen but not because he wasn't a citizen. All you need to do is answer the question and you are all set they don't freeze your account for being undocumented. If they did they would have never let anyone open one. When I opened my account I used my passport or consular card no problem. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Bank of America Freezes Family's Accounts After Demanding Proof of Citizenship

That actually happened to my mom last month. My mom has been with bank of america for more than 20 years I believe. It all started when her credit line was increased and made a few wire transactions to her other bank account. immediately she called customer service and asked what the issue had been and sure enough the person was inquiring about her status. It was a bit confusing at first since the bank has all that information on file, needless to say she even got a mortgage loan through them. The issue was not solved with just simple phone call, she personally had to go to an office branch with her paperwork just to clarify the situation.

My wife (USC), just got a letter from Chase requesting her Citizenship status. I bank with WF and they asked something similar a couple of years ago. When I first opened WF account all they asked me was for an ID and ITIN.

Honestly, I think BofA is one of the more immigrant friendly banks. I have 3 Credit cards with them with limits of 9k, 18k, and 22k . Wells won't even approve me for a CC due to status but they do own my mortgage loan of 275k lol idiots. I do have a Chase CC too with a limit of 18k also. I have no issues with BofA but I guess Chase would be the next best thing .

I bank with Schwab, unlimited automatic rebates on all atm charges lol

If you travel a lot just pull that cash money from anywhere - ain’t no thing

Mobile checks take a little longer than Wells Fargo did but it’s a non-issue for the most part.

===

For the most part tho credit unions might be a safer bet. There is even a Latino based coop in Durham where I live. They’re as competitive as any bank but I don’t use them

What prompts a bank to ask you for your citizenship status?

I've had Chase since my first DACA was granted in 2012 and never had that quesiton asked of me.

You guys realize that it is required for a bank to know your citizenship right? I work in Financial Services and they need to report their deposits appropriately.. They don't care if you are here legally or not, they care what is your country of citizenship and if you are a US Resident or not and by US Resident meaning having a proof of address in the US.

PS. I am laughing at all of you getting some shit 1.75% while I am fully invested in markets and I am printing money :-) go Trump Go

Yep. Schwab is the way to go. Also how the hell did you all get ally accounts? They told me that I had to be a citizen or a permanent resident to get their stupid account.
Also for those people talking about how their ally account reimburses their atm fees, I’m pretty sure it has a limit of 10 bucks. That’s like 4 withdrawals. Schwab has unlimited international and domestic atm fee reimbursements (although the international ones aren’t that important to Dreamers).

Now excuse me while I move my money from BoA.
