Dream Act passes the Judiciary Committee

https://twitter.com/SenatorDurbin/st...294577154?s=19

@SenatorDurbin

House Judiciary Committee passed my #DreamAct, which gives #Dreamers a future in America. Dreamers are teachers, doctors, and soldiers who make our country a better place. I'll continue fighting for them and their dream of becoming U.S. citizens.

They think DACA people don't pay taxes.

That's a step forward, but it is a tiny step. Until it passes the Senate, this means nothing.

I still think the best option would be to put it in a budget bill.

Even if it passes the Senate (which it won’t even get a vote) Trump still has that VETO pen. Fact is this bill isn’t going anywhere, this is all a show to score political points.

If it's shoved into a budget bill then he'll have a hard time issuing a veto.

It doesn't look like that's going to happen right now. The debt ceiling and budget bills are already being negotiated behind closed doors. Both parties basically want no contentious items in order to provide the most basic requirements of a government.

Like the Democrats would ever do that. In Schumer’s own words.. “We can’t let Dreamers take the entire stage”.

Going into the 2020 election immigration is not issue that anyone truly wants to fix at this point.

I'm curious what you think democrats should do so it doesn't look like a "show" to score "political points."

At this point they can’t do nothing. Congress is a shit show and the 2020 elections are near that neither party would truly want to compromise and fix our immigration issue.

The Republicans are doing the same thing right now crafting anti-immigration bills that won’t pass the House, however they are doing so to bring out their base and to bring the party “together”.

Both parties are working on worthless bills that have no chance of passing, however the race to the 2020 elections have started and it’s all about scoring political points now.

I agree with you assessment that if there's legislative relief, it will most likely come after 2020 unless some unexpected thing happens like finally Trump realizing he needs the latino vote to win 2020. Trading DACA for removing visa lottery and take those visas for merit based immigration is not too bad of a deal. Might get some extra money on border security too.

I want to see what happens when the DA passes and goes to the senate. There's surprising amount of republicans that like some form of permanent DACA relief. Will they counter offer or will they just block it? At least we can see where the current senate stands on the issue. DACA is supposed to have bipartisan support, polling between 70%-80% in favor.

Mitch isn't even going to bring up.. he doesn't want to risk a few GOP Sens crossing party lines.

Our best chance was when we were going to be traded for the wall.

There is nothing to negotiate with, congress is gridlocked for DACA. We had everything republican controlled in the gov't.

If you want DACA forever, be my guest. I want DACA dead AND a PERMANENT SOLUTION for all DACA (though without you I wouldn't mind).

Bridge Act is not a permanent solution.

And it has more strict rules. In fact all people with DACA now will not all be eligible for the bridge act.

Seems like people always forget this. Without TPS being included if I'm not mistaken. They did again January 2018 with TPS that time. So that's what 2 times so far?

Basically just forget about bills they never go anywhere. Unless top tier politicians are making moves to get it passed it'll just die somewhere.
