I want to make AB540 students club. Is it good idea? or Bad?
I'm upcoming freshmen in community college and I realized I can make my own club. I thought it would be great idea if I create AB540 students club in my community college. But I think its going to be very challenging b/c I dont really have any experience making a club, but the main reason why I wanna make this club is because I want our(ab540 students) voice to be heard, what kind of life we(ab540 students) face and struggles.. etc
I'm eager to make this club but I dont know how to START! I need your help. Do you think it is a good idea? if so, is there any ideas what can I do during the meetings or even outside of meetings? any creative events? Suggestions? comments? Any advice will be helpful. Thanks. |

at San Jose State we had a club called SAHE, Student Advocates for Higher Education. The group had organized to spread the word of AB540, and was involved in various events in the community. You might wanna get in touch with them.

Re: I want to make AB540 students club. Is it good idea? or Bad?
I think some students might feel apprehensive about joining your club for fear of having people find out about their immigration status, and therefore, you could have some problems attracting members to your club.
Good luck, though. :]] |

yeha like that san jose state club, dont blatantly say AB540. Maybe something with Education or immigration? I didn't know San Jose state had that, I live like 10 miles away from SJSU. Maybe if I go there I will join.

wait what community college? Like in bay area? Because I would be interested in joining up next year when we gotta fight for Dream. Would it be best for me to meet up with san jose state people even though I go to a local community college. Or do we all just call and fax at home?

Hello,
I am in contact with many student groups in California. Community colleges like Santa Barbara City College, East LA College, Santiago Canyon College, Fullerton College, and Santa Monica College have their own support groups. It really is a matter of finding the right message, and administrators who are allies in this cause. The organization they meant to refer you to is CHIRLA, which hosts the California Dream Network. Check this out, http://www.cadreamnetwork.org/home.html Also, visit our recent post in underground undergrads highlighting some of the work we have been doing in different colleges and universities: http://undergroundundergrads.com/200...om-bay-on.html May I ask what school you are with? I work at a research center at UCLA, and have many contacts around the state which may be of help to you and the group you want to form. |

Re: I want to make AB540 students club. Is it good idea? or Bad?
I think it'll be hard to get people into your student group, like some said, because of revealing a legal status.
In my opinion, you should start a student group related to the DREAM Act. It would not only attract those who need it, but also those who support it. Get out there, spread the word at school, organize events, raise money for flyers, newspapers, or anything else that could help you inform people about this Act that a lot of us need. I was about to start a student group but then lost everything and had to take a break from school. I cant wait to go back and start the student group. I have experience organizing events and have many ideas for a student group. PM me if you'd like to talk more about it. Hope to hear from you. |
Re: I want to make AB540 students club. Is it good idea? or Bad?
We started a similar group at UT-Austin my last year there. We called it Jovenes Immigrates por Un Futuro Mejor. There were other 'chapters' of the group formed at UH and Texas A&M later on. The group at UT got as big as ~ 15-20 students I blieve at one point (mostly HB 1403 students, the equivalent of the AB540 in Texas).
We made presentations outlining the issue at hand, our stories and asking for support at different events like organizational fairs/conferences. Met with different interst groups to gain their support and spread the word. Offered our stories for interviews for different publications amongst them Science Mag and WSJ. The group got the Student Govt. to openly support for the DREAM act on behalf of UT and the SG. The group also held call-a-thons, letter writing campaigns and workshops to educate HS students on HB 1403. Although the group was started my last semester (spring 2005) at UT I continued to hear good things abou it the year afterwards. From last I heard they held a Summit on the issue, but I really dont know how it went as I only got the Facebook invite : / and wasnt able to attend. All in all it was a good experience, it helped spread the word to the kids still in HS, inform and gain support from different organizations and personally helped me be more open about my situation to close friends who I had not told about it for years. It felt good to openly spread the word...so I think its a good idea but you just have to be cognizant of the consequences and be up to do it. -Carlos |
