Biden Says He’ll Introduce Immigration Bill ‘Immediately’
 

President-elect Joe Biden says he’ll introduce immigration legislation “immediately” after taking office later this month, and that his Justice Department will investigate the Trump administration’s separation of migrant children from their parents.

“I will introduce an immigration bill immediately,” he said in a news conference on Friday. He said that the Justice Department will determine responsibility for the family separation program, which led to more than 2,600 children being taken from caregivers after crossing the U.S. southern border, and whether it was criminal.

“There will be a thorough, thorough investigation of who is responsible, and whether or not the responsibility is criminal,” Biden said.

That determination will be made by his attorney general-designate, Merrick Garland, he added.

He didn’t detail his immigration legislation. He’s previously said he’ll end Trump’s ban on immigration from predominantly Muslim nations, and that he wants a path to citizenship for so-called Dreamers, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

Biden had previously promised an immigration overhaul within 100 days of taking office on Jan. 20.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m hopeful - haven’t been in years. It feels as if this time is different. I keep telling myself I’ve been burned too many times before but this time feels really different. Biden has surrounded himself with personnel from a broad immigration coalition so he has to know the time is now. I have no doubt they’ve been telling him to act quickly. The economy is failing and what better way than to use immigrants to get the economy building again. He keeps saying he can walk and chew gum at the same time and I believe him. I think a complete overhaul of the immigration system is coming. We shall see. If they implement the same rule with drivers licenses and I’d cards where you pay 2 years of back taxes together with the fine it’s literally an influx of billions flowing into the economy. And that’s not even counting the money for paperwork used to adjust. Immigration has always been the easiest issue to solve.

I felt the same way when Obama won the first time, i hope this new administration does not repeat the same mistakes. I hope they don't leave this issue intil the end of their term in hopes to get more seats in the next election and also don't cave to the Republicans poisoned pills in order to get their support.

He needs to not only send a bill to Congress but hit the ground running on gathering the support and necessary votes to pass it. Seriously, we've got solid footing now, full control of the House and simple majority in the Senate. 2021 has to be the year that AT LEAST a bipartisan Dream Act passes.

I definitely think Trump inadvertently did a good job with Jeff Sessions, from our point of view. First, he took him out of the Senate by appointing him AG, and then fired him lol. There's no way Sessions can come back now.

In Bidens press briefing yesterday, Biden said he would send the bill on day 1 to the committees but then alluded to that it may not be taken up for a while and it was not a current priority. We need to temper our expectations, I seriously doubt that anything will be taking up until the worst of covid is behind up and the economy is in recovery.

The bill is being drafted by a rep from California so expect a lot of drama over it.

I say this not to make people lose hope but have realistic expectations. Our problems are not all solved because trump is out and dems are in. We still have many hardcore trump supporters in office and trump is still capable of torpedoing any bill VIA social media.

I think what will end up delaying this, it’s gonna be the amount of people who will flood to the border trying to get in claiming asylum. A couple of caravans are waiting for Biden to be sworn in to make their trip.

No, Dems had 60 senate seats and control of the house. They did not want it to pass but they wanted to make a show of going through the motions for the Latino votes. That backfired because they lost control of the senate during the midterms and did not get it back until 2020.

This is exactly why I would be happy inshrining daca into law. That at the very least we would have guaranteed protection rather than live at the whims of the others. And that is an easy pill to swallow for most republicans since it wont shift the balance of votes.

Citizenship is too divisive of an issue and is used to kill most immigration deal. Thanks UWD

Lol there’s no need for any of that. The dream act as a stand alone bill might not hit 60 votes, but it’ll be easier to pass as a rider to an appropriations bill, or budget reconciliation.
