Manchin Will to Vote Yes on Immigration

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/...gration-reform

Quote:

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on Thursday after visiting the U.S.-Mexico border that it is "past time" for Congress to address immigration reform, including a path to citizenship, and called the border surge a "crisis."

"It is beyond time, past time, to do immigration reform. Immigration reform should be a pathway to citizenship. People that have been here, they might have come here the wrong way but they came here for the right reason," Manchin said during a press conference.

"We have children that came here that have no other home but America. There should be a pathway for that, for our dreamers, he added.

Manchin and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) toured the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday, including taking a helicopter and boat tour with Customs and Border Protection. They also visited a Laredo, Texas, port of entry and met with migrant families.

Manchin, during the press conference, floated a 90-day moratorium on immigration, saying that he was "just throwing out different ideas."

"We've got a human crisis that I'm seeing here ... so if that means shutting everything down for 90 days of how we have people come into our country, sending that message that we're not going to be taking people into this country until we get our ability to make sure we're able to do it and do it right, is that going to put the pressure?" Manchin asked.

"Something has to be done and it has to be expedited. ... This problem is not going away. This problem will not cure itself, I can assure you, and they're coming in droves," he said.

Manchin also backed beefed up border security, more immigration judges and allowing for immigrants to apply for asylum back in their home countries rather than making an often dangerous journey to the United States.

"It would be safer. It would be much more humane. ... It's something that we should be doing," he said.

Manchin, part of a shrinking group of centrist senators, is at the center of the 50-50 Senate, where he has an outsized influence on nearly every policy debate. Cuellar noted near the start of the press conference that Manchin "plays a very important role."

The border trip comes as Biden has come under criticism from Republicans, and Democrats have shown signs of concern about a surge of unaccompanied children arriving along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. was in custody of at least 15,000 migrant children as of late last week, and the federal government has struggled to secure enough housing for all of them, particularly during the pandemic.

Manchin said that his characterization of the surge as a "crisis," wasn't criticism of Biden.

"When I call this a crisis, I'm not blaming the crisis on the present administration of President Biden, the former administration of President Trump," he said. "This has been a human crisis for a long, long time."

Manchin added that he planned to return to Washington, D.C., and discuss his trip with both Biden and his colleagues.

Biden has proposed a sweeping, comprehensive immigration reform bill, though it's unlikely that could pass in the Senate where 10 GOP votes would be needed. A bipartisan group is also holding talks about a smaller bill that would address immigrants brought into the country illegally as children.

"This can happen," Manchin added about immigration legislation. "Common sense can prevail and that's what we're hopeful for."
There has been a lot of talk on the forum on how Manchin and the blue dogs will vote. This clarifies his position and I think his trip is an actual segway into putting a bipartisan bill on the floor; most likely from his group of 20 centralist senators.

Although its a long shot but as Rudy would say, "There is a non-zero" chance.

It's only 2 months into the administration, there is still lots of time left in the game for something to get done.

still leaves uf with Tester and Sinema. Manchin voted for comprehensive reform in 2014. Don't remember how Tester voted that year but I recall getting like 60+ votes for that immigration bill. But filibuster isn't going away. Our only hope will be giving Republicans border security in exchange for DACA/TPS legalization. Only way full immigration reform passes for the 11+ million is if Dems win 2-3 more senate seats and keep the house in 22. Odds are they will lose the house thanks to gerrymandering and they are likely to pick up 2-3 seats and possibly lose only 1 if any senate seats in 22. That way they can kill the filibuster and Manchin, Sinema will have no role in deciding the outcome.

The border will never be secured and that's why Republicans use it as a condition to pass immigration reform. Even if by some miracle it would be secure, they'll come up with something else. At this point, eliminating the filibuster is the only way.

The Senate parliamentarian has ruled that Democrats may amend the budget resolution they used for their Covid-19 relief bill and attach another set of reconciliation instructions to it, according to two sources familiar with the matter https://cnn.it/3rT4rhd

The question is, can they and will they try with with Dream Act/Immigration reform?

With a 100% certainty they will not be doing anything like that. They're not done squeezing this out as much as possible just yet. They're going to take the long road on DA/Immigration for sure.

Biden and the Leftist Democrats are holding themselves accountable only to AOC and the open borders crowd ruining the Democratic Party.

They could care less about what the majority of Americans think about the border crisis.

They know they already lost the House in 2022 and probably the Senate.

That's why they have no incentive to work with Republicans.

Their goal is power and spending trillions of dollars on big government give aways in the name of progressivism.

Total joke.

I hope Sen. Durbin starts negotiations in good faith.

But I'm already planning on no move on DREAM Act/DACA fix.

The Biden Harris administration doesn't care about how bad the border crisis looks.

Shameless

You just love to make things up in your head. You're so dense. I never said DA would pass within 100 days (show me otherwise). In the other thread, I mentioned Biden has been in office for 75 days to point out how pathetic he's been lately. In your delusional mind though, that means my expectation is for something to pass in under 100 days. Again, you make up what you want in your dense head.

And I never said Ds alone would pass anything. I said Rs would not be there to support and provide votes and as a result, nothing will pass. Again, making things up in your mind.

The border is a single issue and I think the Dems have a good chance of retaining the senate. The bills they are pushing are favorable

The house is 50/50 depending on how the dems message and how dirty they want to play it. If the dems are will to step on the GOPs throat with their 2022 messaging, they have a chance of keeping the house. It will be won or lost in the suburbs again.

I seriously think a solid option people should also look into is adjusting via marriage. Seriously, not saying you should marry just for GC...but try to find someone worthwhile, someone special...and if they are a citizen/GC holder, even better. That looks like more promising path forward for Dreamers towards legalization. I personally think the radical left (people who want to "Abolish ICE" like Omar, Tlaib, AOC etc) and UWD will try their level best to prevent anything from passing, but I do have some hope that Joey will work towards brokering a deal...Dicky Durbin is just too soft man...He needs some reinforcement to pass DA fix.

Of course! What's there to praise when it comes to Biden!? Biden has shown absolutely no effort to rally senators to bring the necessary votes to have a bill passed for Dreamers. He's done nothing up to this point on that front. If you have evidence that shows otherwise, please post sources and I'll shut my mouth. It's gonna take more than Biden trying for something to pass.

You keep talking about him like he's the key or the magic formula for something good passing for us. He is not negotiating or bringing people to the table. No healing. No bipartisanship as far as I can tell. Especially because R's don't give a shit and don't respect him. He ain't got leverage on the R senators we need and if he did, he's doing jack shit up to this point.

It's actually almost the exact opposite. His weak ass stance and actions on the migrant issue on the border is hurting our chances of something good passing for us.

Meanwhile, those in congress are doing their dog and pony show. Par for the course. It's a total shit show!

You are so dense and narrow minded. I don't have to support Trump or Biden when it comes to me believing one of them will be the cause of legislation passing for us... especially if there is no solid reason or indication to believe that. It does not have to be support one or the other, like your simpleton mind is programmed to believe it is. I can hate on both if I wish. And Trust me, Biden hasn't given me any reason to have faith yet... so I won't. Just saying he supports Dreamers is hot gas. How about some true action for fuck's sake!?

I frankly don't have faith in any current politician. Even Durbin. Decades of trying and what? Nothing. Just has his 10 minute speeches showing pretty portraits of dreamers on the floor over and over. Pathetic.

Ever heard of the internet?

U should watch the videos of those kids being thrown over the border wall.

Maybe that will change ur mind.

Or maybe not.

Mainstream media would be KILLING to report the crisis if this was happening under Trump or any Republican.

It's a crisis and when people like you diminish the suffering of innocent young kids and teenagers only makes u seem more elitist and overly educated thinking you know more than the average US voter.

Biden doesn't care. He should be holding meetings with the Senate, GOP and Dems.

It's estimated 180,000 unaccompanied minors will make it to the border this year.

But of course....don't call it a crisis Psaki :)

Republicans and /or Democrats in Congress don't care if we get legalized or not.

Their reelection and politics come first.

It is time we all start to realize this.

Let's get our education down, marry or move out of the country.

This country and it's politics are just too much. Utterly ridiculous.

Immigration system is shit, no papers? Sure you can work, no papers? Sure you can attend k-12.

But once we are adults, nope! Go back to cleaning those toilets.

"Dreams are for citizens only."

Total bullshit. We are worth more than just a USCIS piece of paper.

Dems want open borders and citizenship for all or none.

Republicans want to enforce the law and start fresh, but they are also tainted by their business allies who like cheap labor.

USA: you can't have it all: cheap labor but act tough on immigration law.

We must break free.

No matter what

Obama balls?

He only created DACA because he failed to convince DEM Senators to vote for DA or bring GOP to the table.

Ever wonder why GOP doesn't support DEM bills and vice versa? Because it's a take it all or nothing choice.

The DREAM Act wasn't going to pass nor is going to pass in it's current form.

If Obama had been serious about DREAM ACT passing, he would have put the work in.

He did it so he could win reelection in 2012.

We owe him nothing.

He was actually a very unpopular President because he was so left wing and loved to talk about race...like all the time

Whiner in Chief.

Oh and he also put kids in cages. Obama loved the filibuster when he was in the Senate but now he opposes it...how convenient.

Total empty politico suit. Only got elected cause of his skin color and his preachy sermons/speeches
