Democrats eye DACA fix in lame-duck session

Congressional Democrats are weighing a push for a fix to the decade-old program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants known as “Dreamers” in the lame-duck session.

Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate signaled Tuesday that Democrats are open to pursuing a bill for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program before the new session of Congress starts in January, when Republicans are favored to take control of the House.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., mentioned addressing DACA as a top priority in the lame-duck session in a Democratic caucus meeting Tuesday, a senior Democratic aide said.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said: “We want to get DACA done. We’d like to get whatever we can do in the lame-duck session, and a number of our senators — led by Senator [Dick] Durbin as well as Senator [Kyrsten] Sinema and others working in a bipartisan way — we’re trying to get something done.”

Durbin, the Democratic whip, told reporters, “It’s a long shot but it’s still worth pursuing.”

Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus, confirmed at a news conference Tuesday that the issue is a priority for House Democrats.

“The courts have put DACA at risk moving forward, and we want to make sure that we offer the ability for these individuals who have had DACA status and are American in every way — except the piece of paper — to continue and to have hopefully a legislative solution to a path to citizenship,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar noted that Democrats will need 10 GOP votes in the Senate to move forward with legislation. He expressed confidence that a group of Senate Democrats, including Durbin, are working to get the votes.

Yeah right. If this was a priority, you wouldn't wait till lame duck to act like you tried to do something...

An article from Bloomberg said something similar. I think if they focus on fixing daca only and are willing to implement border security, then something can pass. We never had a bill that was focused just on Daca.

When they add other groups, push for special pathway citizenship, and stuff like that, the situation gets tricky. Daca is really the only politically safe middle ground for the GOP

The GOP wants border security and funding + asylum reform. Frankly, I am ok with a 5-year renewable work permit because that adds a level of safety and security we don't have. Citizenship means very little at this point.

With the Hawks controlling the house, nothing will pass in the next 2 years.

they havent mentioned anything on the legalization for all or nothing bullsht for the first time....

if they mention ANYTHING related to it again it will kill anything for us DACAs.

dont be surprised if our greatest enemy "United We Dream" begins with the legalization for all or nothing sht since it means the end of their cash grab.

regardless, if we get citizenship, voting for the Fanta Orange man is the only way to save the country.

this is like a trial test of whats to come for DACA, if they dont do anything right now, we are beyond fked next year when DACA reaches SCOTUS. if only United We Dream would keep their fkin mouth shut with the legalization for all or nothing bullsht. smfh

How convenient that they (typically) wait until the last minute and with imminent Republican- house control to 'try' to help. Cowards and corrupt lot.

7-8 million essential workers with lives in limbo. Ask why they can legalize marijuana, but not immigrants.

DURBIN says he has 4-5 Senate GOP votes for Dreamer relief, "but we need more!"

The Senate Majority Whip said "after Thanksgiving" will be crunch time for immigrant relief in the Senate, especially if the House has a GOP majority.

Re: Democrats eye DACA fix in lame-duck session

Senator, would you vote for dreamer relief in the lame duck...?

Sen. BLUNT (R-MO): "Absolutely. I think that could pass easily if you'll offer it as cleanly as you possibly can rather than adding other things onto it that are about immigration but not about the dreamers."

Will be symbolic bill. Dems will then blame Republicans, and will say they need more democrats in congress. Same old story.

Re: Democrats eye DACA fix in lame-duck session

Sen. CRUZ (R-TX): "I think the immigration issue we outta take up during the lame duck is securing the border."

- Follow up: Would you trade border security for dreamer relief?

CRUZ: "There's always room for negotiation."

Looks like if it's just DACA for boarder security than there is a possibility of something happening.

From what I read, it is not dreamer relief, it's Daca relief. They want to put a fix in for Daca, most believe that it is the only thing with a chance to pass, and there is a need because of the SC.

I don't recall there ever being a daca only bill but that is the group with the most bipartisan support.

Sure! DACA only but with age limit. Nobody 30yrs old and over qualifies ! So only DACAs under 30 plus border security.

I can already see you voting MAGA once you get that green card. All dreamers in the current program should be allowed in, what makes you think you can just start kicking dreamers off the program?

Exactly. I’m 34 year old in the DACA program. There are plenty of us.

I hate making it about politics but conservatives has way more of the tendency to be all about “me, me, me” and narcissism that goes with it.

Re: Democrats eye DACA fix in lame-duck session

I was being sarcastic. The age limit was a dumb idea when DACA was introduced and it would be a dumb idea now. I think all dreamers should be included regardless of age. I don’t get this weird punishing people for the passage of time.

Re: Democrats eye DACA fix in lame-duck session

There is a genuine opportunity for something to pass in the lame duck session.

We've heard Cornyn speak off mic during gun legislation saying he wanted Immigration to be next. DACA is on shaky grounds and in line for Supreme Court review.

You have a GOP that ran on Border issue to get elected. They barely got a win in the House and Trump backed candidates got a spanking...

I think we're seeing the centering of the GOP from the hard right.

Sen. LANKFORD (R-OK): "I've not even seen a proposal or anything on immigration coming up, so it is not realistic at this point because no one's even floated a real proposal around."

That's because everyone is trying to craft a bill and be the hero that breaks the 30+ year deadlock. Hopefully, they at least do the bare minimum and turn daca into a law.
