S.9 is up !

The bill is up & "Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 9".What is also interesting is that the bill has Senator McCaskill & Senator Begich as co-sponsors already & has 13 Democrats signed on already !

I know what the bill is, but what does this mean for us exactly?

Re: S.9 is up !

Title: A bill to strengthen the United States economy, provide for more effective border and employment enforcement, and for other purposes.

I doubt it is a Dream Act

No, It's not the Dream Act. However, it signlas that congress will consider immigration reform legislation.

My apologies, Ianus, I'm a little cloudy now. I know what S.9 is, but do you think DREAM would be attached to it, like it was with CIR, or do you think it will be just one big bill?

Re: S.9 is up !

There is no doubt Dream act will eventually be attached to this bill,Durbin will ensure it.

Good idea, i read somewhere that CIR will be debated in late fall and voted on in early 2010. At least that is what frank sharry said.

Re: S.9 is up !

I have been pondering yesterday about this year, and may have come up with a couple of theories on how immigration may move.

1. With this trillion dollar stimulus and this massive 1.2 trillion dollar deficit for the fiscal year, there isn't much to do in terms of health care and energy since those would be too expensive. This would mean he was to wait and do other things like education, war, and it seems now immigration. None of these things are as costly as health care and a new energy focus. I am starting to read this on a couple of news blogs.

2. I think there are lot more supporters of the dream act than we think. I have a list compiled with the number at 61 if we included McCaskill. I think some senators will vote for cloture and then vote against the bill if they they want to show that they were tough on immigration. This is probably what some of the democrats that voted against it last time would do. I think a lot of senators just didn't vote for it because they know it would fail.

3. I have a feeling that the DREAM Act will come up around the time of education is debated, unless immigration will take place early spring. All indications point to the fall, but who knows. It really depends on what Obama meant about moving a fast as possible to pass the DA. If number 2 is true, then it is more likely that it can come up on it own during education, since education will be piecemeal. I just find it strange that Obama would separate the DA, then wait for it to be added to CIR.

Also, I have heard some talk that Obama can't be trusted because he is a politician. While that may be true, a good example of him possibly keeping his campaign promises is the middle class tax cuts that he wants to be in the stimulus. People are saying it wont do much for the economy and he is just doing it to fulfill his campaign promise. That is a good sign.

I'm one of those people who does not trust him or any other politician. It may be true regarding tax cut, it definitely won't be true abt dream act. They'll put all the immigration related topic in one bill. To them, it would be end of the world if education or any other bill contain the word immigration and immigrant. Dream act would affect least amount people and its more effective because we are all educated and can contribute to the economy lot more then any guest worker and any other class of illegal immigrant. That's why politician and activist won't fight hard to separate because it might just work and won't be as flashy as let say full legalization.

Lets hope that this makes it all the way up to Obama's desk. And what can we do to attach DREAM to this? Send e-mails? Any info will be apreciated.

We know it's certainly doomed if it's attached to this.

SOOO the question is where is S.7 in the congressional schedule?

there are too many other issues in this bill that makes it controversial and more rejectable. We would rather have Dream as a standalone issue and help it pass. Attaching it to something much bigger or controversial just complicates and might push other senators to oppose the bill then to pass it.

What is eating me is not being able to read the bill. Once we know what is inside, I can pass judgment. Also, it is important to know how small grassroots organizations and big national advocacy groups feel about the content of s.7. Until then, I am skiping the hard alcohol cheers.

1/6/2009--Introduced. Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009 - Expresses the sense of Congress that Congress should enact, and the President should sign, legislation to strengthen the economy, recognize the heritage of the United States as a nation of immigrants, and amend the Immigration and Nationality Act by: (1) providing more effective border and employment enforcement; (2) preventing illegal immigration; and (3) reforming and rationalizing avenues for legal immigration.

Senator Leahy stated in opening remarks:

“The 111th Congress, we will try, once again, to enact comprehensive immigration reforms that have eluded us in the past several years. With an administration that understands the critical necessity of meaningful reform and that understands the policy failures of the last 8 years, I am hopeful that the new Congress can finally enact legislation consistent with our history as a nation of immigrants. The majority leader has included immigration reform as among the legislative priorities for the new Congress. I look forward to working with him, Senator KENNEDY, Senator MCCAIN, and others interested in working toward the goal of immigration reform.”
